yea her freshman roomate was such a druggie sara nearly flunked out. fact is she’s not a bongo the other girls who are giving her crap for reporting her roomate are
How many people in the course of this strip has she been genuinely nice to? I count one, maybe two at a push?
What she did with her room-mate was right, no doubt about that, but she doesn’t exactly go out of her way to be nice.
calendarman27
Well yeah, but we don’t know what she was like last year. Maybe she tried being nice and got nowhere. Maybe she’s a product of her environment.
Jack Faire
Yeah I have never liked that whole product of her environment thing as it 1) shows a lack of total self awareness or awareness that her environment has changed and 2) Means that anyone that is racist can say, “Hey I am a product of my environment not my fault but I won’t change”
She is a product of her environment, but that only accounts for part of how she acts. From how she reacts when she does do antisocial things, she is aware of what she is doing and why.
As for your second part, that’s an argument that can easily be dissolved. Especially given that it’s something that you say something of someone else, not something you claim. Claiming it makes it untrue.
From the evidence it seems like her roommate smoked pot and she tattled on her. Until we get the back story I am obligated to side against her.
There is no reason to ruin someone else’s life because you are uncomfortable with something they are doing to themselves.
Bean
Are you kidding me? I can’t remember the details, but I assume it was smoked in their room, and that’s MORE than enough reason to turn a pothead in.
Pot stinks to high heaven, and if there’s enough smoke around, you get a kind of contact high from it, making any kind of serious studying impossible. So, unless the backstory involves her stalking her roomie to get them busted, I’m very firmly on her side. Everyone talks about how inoffensive pot is, but Even leaving aside the legality of it, It’s every bit as foul and rude as cigarettes are.
kagato23
Thing is, if your roomate is busted for having pot, you can be busted as well, at the least as an accessory (your storing it in your room).
Sarah didn’t want that risk. her rommie gets busted, she’s out too. So she got her roomate busted in a way that spared her.
My impression though? I’m guessing she was like this largely beforehand as well. Never really liked, and this put her into outright hated territory.
Liberal1337
None of you have ever even read “roomies” have you? Mr. Willis likes to exhibit a form of self righteousness in certain characters as a sign of naive immaturity. Danny was like this in his previous story and problems arose in his life because of it.
Any way, there are ways to get around getting anyone in trouble. You can discuss the issue with your room mate orrrrrr opt for a housing change. Both are better than being a narc. If you opt for the narc route you’d better be ready to be ostracized from college society.
A lot of people drink or smoke in college and none of them want to hang out with a girl who will throw them under the buss.
Hey Buddy
Hey, the other comics don’t apply. The author’s clearly stated we shouldn’t do this in message boards, Ms. Cannon.
Zuche
No.
Peer pressure does not give you the right to compromise your campus roommate for something that can get you both barred from campus if said roommate just turns a blind eye to it.
It is not, nor should ever have been, Sarah’s problem. The person who didn’t care that she was making it her problem got what she deserved.
DudeMyDadOwnsADealership
Aye. Message for Raidah: Antagonizing Sarah is a poor substitute for failure to do anything to bail your friend out, instead of simply expecting Sarah’s ‘hater’ ass to ‘be cool.’
We don’t know for sure that you didn’t, but it’s a plausible assumption.
Yeah, yeah, Sarah’s still a ‘bongo’ either way, but that only furthers how not leaving your friend’s fate in her grump roommate’s hands would’ve counted a lot more towards proving you actually CARED about her than this fix-er-uppa tomato throwing…
If your life can be ruined by people telling the wrong people the truth, it’s past time to reconsider your life choices. Like maybe don’t chose to break the law on a daily basis in front of someone who has no reason to lie for you.
Now I can’t unsee. I must assume her eyes look like that because she is high and she’s just mad at Sarah for being a snitch. Otherwise she needs to see a doctor ASAP.
It will probably be the character most beloved by the fans that hasn’t made it into Dumbing of Age. We wil realise within three coments that we will now never get a DoA version of that character who is regular and then we will all hate Sarah as much as the girls do.
This strip makes me feel for Sarah though. Maybe, maybe she just hates everyone now because she is stuck with all the hate anyway…
🙁 Nah I still cannot like her. Because I am a bad person.
i know what you mean, i feel bad she had a bad roommate and is getting all this hate, but at the same time, her anti-social tendencies are not helping her situation, so while i do feel bad for her, part of it is also her own fault
gangler
Oh for sure. Vicious cycle that way. Like attracts like and whatnot. When everyone in your life is a hostile figure you have a tendency to assume anyone will be hostile until shown otherwise. When you treat everyone like they’re hostile it doesn’t take long for them to become so.
Our world creates us and then we in turn forge the world around us in an endless cycle of growth. With our every action we manipulate the environment and remake it in our image.
Joe is a horny man who lives in a world dominated by sexuality. Dan is a worrier who lives in a world of problems. Walky is a jokester who lives in a world of laughs and fun. Sarah’s surroundings too reflect her just as she reflects them.
Zanosuke_Kurosaki
That somehow makes your Joyce gravatar highly appropriate. 😀

I absolutely love their food, but I refuse to give them my money. It means much more to me than boycotting things I don’t use anyway.
Yep! It’s in the South though, and it’s based on Christian foundations. It funds anti-gay rallies or something. I still eat there though because their chicken is delicious and anti-gay rallies are pointless anyways. Also it’s not open on Sundays, the ONLY day when I ever crave it. (I hope you weren’t being sarcastic, otherwise I probably sound like an idiot right now)
GJs and Hillsong aren’t connected in quite the same way. GJ’s is owned by members (including an elder) of Hillsong, and both organisations used to support Mercy Minitsries, a religous based women’s shelter, until it came out how dodgy they were (exorcism instead of counselling etc). When that happened both GJs and Hillsong dropped sponsorship like a rock.
That’s the closest they’ve come to any direct financial support of one another.

They stick to their morals and values which is whey they’ve stayed one of the top restaurants in this economy.

If he were simply sticking to his religious ideals, that’s one thing. However, he associates with militant groups like the American Family Association and Focus on the Family – both of whom are on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s “Hate Group” list for their ties to white nationalist organizations, as well as specific ethno-centric activities. I can verify from experience that Indiana University Bloomington, where the comic is set, has a Chick-Fil-A in the food court of the main library. I had some, due to a college friend from Texas raving about it. It was… ok.
Don’t remember seeing a C-F-A anywhere in Bloomington, come to think of it. Though I remember seeing one elsewhere not too long ago, which should mean Boston.

In point of fact it’s actually kind of representative of a different paradigm. Joyce for example goes throughout her day and sees kind people, makes friends, encounters misunderstandings that may be overcome. The most villainous figure she encountered was Joe and even his villainy took the form of a civilized, intelligent, and reasonable discussion.
Sarah goes through her day and she sees crowds filled with spiteful people beyond reason. The great act of kindness she encounters is someone willing to share a table in silence. Neutrality and uncaring is the high-point in for her.
Keep in mind too that anyone who becomes friends with her will quickly be forced to choose between putting up with what she puts up with or becoming part of that jeering spiteful crowd.
This is the kind of shit that effects your perceptions. That’s how Sarah and Joyce can look at Billie and see two entirely different people.
