          I believe the DoA Tsundere scale goes:

          Ruth -> Sarah -> Billie -> Walky

          Walky is last because while he was initially loathe to admit when he liked a girl, it got resolved fairly quickly and he makes no efforts to hide it now.

          Billie and Ruth managed to be all “I-it’s not like I like you or anything” to each other even after they started sleeping together, which is impressive.

          I rank Sarah between them because her mild misanthropy is more severe than Billie’s “I’m too cool to be your friend, but I will anyway”, but not nearly as bad as Ruth’s “I will threaten genuine violence rather than admit I care”.

          Mostly agree with the ordering, Sarah should be higher on the list because she seems more self-loathing and feels she doesn’t deserve close friends where Ruth can at least accept when they come around.

          I would classify Billie’s tsundere as being more like “I’m WAY too cool to like you, but by a strange (and annoying) coincidence, you always happen to be going where I want to go, so I’m always around you, so PLEASE stop following me because it’s making me really confused!”

      I read Sarah as a genuinely social and caring person who was forced to abandon much of her social side due to college workload and has tried to abandon her caring side because of the shit show last year. It is still just a facade though.

          Yes, it is indeed a reference to Arsenal FC. They were so named because the original football team was made up of workers from the Royal Arsenal munitions factory at Woolwich* (they were originally called Woolwich Arsenal before the war)

      Danny has stormed off to find somewhere quiet to mourn and sulk. Meanwhile, Ethan (being Ethan) is going to stay in the lounge area, fretting about Amber and dithering about what (if anything) he should do. He will stay in this indecision loop until Mike mocks him into taking some manner of action by sarcastically and bitterly suggesting that Amber is better off staying miserable rather than relying on a loser like Ethan to help her see sense.

        Honestly I would not be disappointed if we never saw Mike again. He exists pretty much solely as a source of “jokes” or as a means to force the plot to move forwards when it gets stuck because of existing characterizations.

      Sith Danny and Mike? Mike fits in the role, but I’m not sure if Danny.

        It’s in reference to a comment thread I think two days ago, where someone suggested that Danny was becoming another Mike, and wondered if Mike would appreciate a fellow jerkass or would screw with Danny. I then basically described Mike recruiting Danny in a Sith-like way, then commented about wanting to draw them as Sith but not having the skill. Mike is the master, Danny the apprentice. In a way I’m comparing Danny’s increasing cynicism, depression, and angst to him falling to the dark side of the force.

          I think that an underdone piece of toast would make a better Anakin than Hayden Christensen, but to be fair to him there’s reason to think the problem was mostly in the writing and direction.

    Not sure if Dina is being manipulative, or just what in this comic.

      Manipulative would suggest she’s being underhanded instead of completely forthright in what she’s expecting from her friendship with Sarah. There’d need to be some level of deception going on or ulterior motives that aren’t stated outright, so I don’t think manipulative is the word you’re looking for.

      Remember that this is Dina; she isn’t so good at social interaction and tends to prize clarity over tact. In order to understand what she means, you have to realise that she says precisely what she’s thinking without any consideration to her listener’s ego or self-image.

      Sarah kind of likes this characteristic about Dina but, at other times, it drives her to distraction. Dina’s closing line in this strip reminds us that Dina needs Sarah to tell her this as she wouldn’t guess it otherwise!

      And then she would respect your wishes, without judgment, and you would lose a friend. But as long as you know exactly what you want and never need to look at yourself through someone else’s eyes I guess.

        And we should remember Dina knows this, and takes that possible outcome into account before she speaks. It’s not like being told to fuck of is a new experience to her. She’s willing to risk this rare friendship to maintain its honesty because she finds it more valuable than navigating the labyrinth of politenesses and ego-stroking of your common, shallow social relationships. If you don’t want that, well, I’d have to say it’s your loss.

    I don’t know whether to go “aaawww” over how heart warming this is, or “OOOOHHH” at how quickly Dina just verbally tore down all of Sarah’s walls. These two are quickly developing a great dynamic, and Dina is getting a lot of snark practice in.

      Content is not automatically equivalent to ‘happy’. I don’t think that Dina really understood the potential of happiness before she met Becky and I suspect that she wants to see if its alchemy works for other people she knows.

    Between Dina being forthright because that’s how she faces life so it’s how she interacts with people: and Sarah’s carefully constructed walls against interacting with people because that’s how she choses not to interact with people…these two have a great dynamic.

    Not that I don’t love Dina – she’s one of my favorite characters, and the way she just shot down Sarah without even intentionally doing it is one of my favorite things ever, BUT STILL.

    What’s truly great about this dynamic is that the very /reason/ Sarah is so good at keeping people away is the exact reason her technique doesn’t work on Dina. Her walls and strategies are incredibly effective in a framework of typical social rules and norms. Guess who doesn’t fit that framework? Dina.

    (To a lesser extent this may be something that contributed to Joyce and Sarah’s friendship as well.)
