Jennifer’s parents show up in the area for business related reasons. Asher happens to run into them. Mentions he knows Jennifer. They’re like, “Oh, tell her we said hi, would you?” Asher’s like, “Actually, we’re meeting up right here, she’ll be hee in two minutes.” Jennifer’s parents: “Byeee!”
See I don’t know if Ethan’s going to be better long term, since you know, Asher is kinda complicit in Mike’s death.
Karadaga
Knowing how bad of a place Ethan is in right now, he’d probably relish fucking the guy who had Blaine assassinated
Thag Simmons
The thing is I think there’s like a 50/50 shot that the Mob also made sure that Mike didn’t wake up, and even if that’s not true it wouldn’t be hard for Ethan to assume that.
Agemegos
But how would Asher be implicated in that?
I have to say that I have never understood how Mike was a threat to the mob, how they knew he was a threat to the mob, and why he was perfectly safe from them until he jumped off that staircase and then suddenly had to hide from them afterwards. Maybe Asher was involved somehow. If so, I’d like someone to explain.
Armadillo
Implication I got was that Mike had dirt on Amber’s Dad, and so had access to a lot of very important information through this. Amber’s Dad didn’t go broadcasting this, because if people found out he was getting blackmailed by a high school/ first year college student (Pretty sure Mike started fucking with Amber’s Dad before the start of the comic), he would have been dealt with a whole lot sooner. But once Amber’s Dad started kidnapping people and put Mike in the hospital it became clear what a massive liability he was and so the mob suddenly had a lot of tidying up to do.
That’s the situation as I understood it at least, could be wrong about some details.
Agemegos
Blaine didn’t start kidnapping people until after Amazi-Girl stashed Mike in a hospital with no ID. Which was after Mike suddenly went from tooling around campus without precautions to “No cops!”
And none of that adds up to Asher being complicit in Mike’s death anyway.
thejeff
The “no cops” wasn’t so much that the mob was after Mike as that he knew Blaine had mob connections to corrupt cops.
I don’t see any reason for the mob to be after Mike now that Blaine’s out of the way. Unless Blaine told Lester, before getting killed, that he’d let Mike get evidence of mob activity. Which seems unlikely.
No, Asher has some problems on account of his “””past””” “I could make some calls” mob connections, but he isn’t complicit in Mike’s death. Just Blaine’s and maybe Ross’s. He is going to get crap for Mike just by association when people find out, though.
thejeff
Complicit in the kidnappings though.
nightshade
mike blackmailed ambers dad (who seemed to be ripping off a Korean mafia thing) into taking them on a school trip and they stopped at the gas/convenience store that Sal tried to rob
Asher and Sal were robbing stores to pay for Marcie’s operation that she never received and can’t talk because of it well that’s why sal did it asher seemed to be just a hood ….
How do you figure Asher as complicit in Mike’s suicide? I’ll grant that he was complicit in the miraculous kidnapping and in the murder of Blaine, but Mike picking a fight with Blaine and Ross wasn’t even part of that plan.
Airyu
Mike didn’t die by suicide ;;
Needfuldoer
I don’t know about that. He tackled Blaine off a fire escape from two stories up. The only reason it wasn’t a murder-suicide was because Blaine got lucky grabbing that rope.
Was he sacrificing himself to save Amber? Mostly. Did he regret his “be an asshole for the right reasons” path after drawing parallels with Blaine’s explanation of his own motives to Amazi-Girl? Maybe a little. We may never know definitively.
Agemegos
He tried to take Blaine with him, but yes, he killed himself by intentionally diving off a fire escape.
Even if he did it in an attempt to murder Blaine. Even if he did it to atone for having bullied Amber. Even if Blaine and Ross were trying to kill him at the time. He did it to himself and he died of it.
Mark
I’ll have to study that passage again. I thought it was more of an “Uh-oh, well, if I’m going to die I’m taking you to hell with me.” Which failed.
I’d rather call it unintentional death by misadventure. If he wanted to die and take Blaine with him there was much more street to aim for than car, to me it seemed much more a “this might kill me but I’m out of better choices” move than “here comes sweet death.”
Proxiehunter
Two stories up is a fall where you expect to wish you were dead because of the pain from the numerous broken bones. If you land badly like Mike did (as I recall he went over head first and landed square on his head) then yeah you die but it’s not a “this is certain death” fall.
Proxiehunter
It’s also a fall where you’re likely to have some spinal damage, and maybe some internal bleeding and organ damage, but the kind where you survive and might have to be in a wheel chair if you’re unlucky as long as you get to a good hospital quickly.
I sure hope Walky doesn’t end up in the same position, people are saying maybe Lucy didn’t break up with him. They both have equal grounds to have assumed their girls are done with them.
David DeLaney
and we end up with Walky/Asher sticking their tongues out collectively at Billie/Lucy
“Breaking up” is a straightforward thing. This is more of the same “we’re in a relationship, but we can’t actually be in a relationship because that would make me vulnerable, and so I’m just going to tell you everything you do is wrong, but I don’t even care” nonsense she’s been on ever since she noticed he dressed like Walky.
Why is everyone so surprised and acting like this is weird or uncalled for? She has explicitly said, out loud, for our benefit, what she currently needs in a relationship – aloof and distant.
Which is of course the Love she received from her parents.
As we were just reminded like three fricking days ago DID YOU ALL FORGET ABOUT TREE LAW SO QUICKLY
Did y’all already forget that Jennifer JUST lost some of her cool towards AN AUTHORITY FIGURE SHE HAS STAYED ON THE POSITIVE SIDE OF FOR DECADES as a coping mechanism for not receiving the same good girl points from her actual parents? Specifically because Linda was pushing ABOUT the absence and aloofness of her parents?
And in one of her most recent strips, Jennifer said “finally, this relationship’s on track” when Asher was giving her the aloof, distant, barely-recognizable-affection that she craves, but now he ruined it by PUSHING ABOUT HER PARENTS RIGHT AFTER LINDA DID.
Billie can’t afford to break up with Linda and Charles. She’s known Asher for a couple months, and he’s crossing her lines. See ya, fuckboy
Whaaaaaaaat the fuck. “I need my boyfriend to be aloof and distant, and if he starts expressing emotions I get to treat him badly until he gets back in line” is not like, an acceptable boundary. Yeah, Jennifer has a lot of reasons for why she is acting this way, many of which are or stem from childhood neglect. So fucking what? That does not make it okay to treat someone this way, at all.
This is not about Asher bringing up her parents. “I need you to give me more space” would be a fine boundary, saying “You need to continue embracing unhealthy habits and suppressing your emotions” is not a boundary. A relationship in which one of the participants is not allowed to express emotions or be anything other than aloof and distant is unhealthy, and saying “Finally this relationship is back on track” when your boyfriend seems aloof, distant, and UNHAPPY, it’s emotional abuse.
Jennifer’s “needs” cannot be “Asher isn’t allowed to have needs.” If him expressing a desire for closeness is “ruining” it or crossing her lines, then she needs to break up with him because that is emotional abuse, not setting healthy boundaries.
Oh right, now you mention it Jennifer very directly expresses the old therapist saying “until we heal, we seek intimate relationships that remind us of the parents that hurt us.”
Contentious Fart
Why on Earth can’t Jennifer’s needs as a character be for Asher to not have needs? I don’t even agree with your read that that is what is happening here, but what a wild thing to say! Characters are allowed to have needs and drives that are not healthy. That’s how drama happens.
Please remember that these are fictional characters and representation of bad actions is not endorsement of bad actions. We need to be able to make messy art about messy humans making messes.
I am curious what she means on the technically meeting them, like has he met the Billingsworths?
Also, I know she’s going to get a ton of shit here in the comment section, and understandably so, but I am not even really finding it in me to get mad at her. Their relationship seems to have reached its expiration point. Pull the plug, both of you, for both your sakes.
I thought she meant that the Walkertons are technically her parents. But he might have met the Billingsworths at some point but before meeting/dating Jennifer herself?
And they both come from families with some level of power from the same town. It’s possible they’ve met either at a “networking” type of event or a visit to one of their homes to discuss business.
Like at prom. Assuming (hoping!) they showed up when she crashed her SUV into a tree.
Thag Simmons
gonna make a wild assumption and say they did not
Agemegos
Yeah, but was Asher present when Billie crashed her car?
Laura
If he went to the same high school and went to prom, then maybe.
Agemegos
Well, there’s no reason to suppose the he did go to the same high school (there are half a dozen or more in Evansville). Even if he did, I don’t believe that everyone at prom would go along with Billie when she left in her car, or called on her afterwards, let alone necessarily while her parents were with her.
Yeah, as much as it’s shitty that Jennifer finds “anything that reminds her even a little bit of Walky” to be an immediate and complete turnoff, and as much as she’s being unreasonable with all of this, the former point is not necessarily her fault, and the latter point is a good reason for her boyfriend (and while people are free to define their relationships however they want, this here feels either like gaslighting or breaking up) to break up with her. Which I think is actually what she’s trying to get him to do, maybe? Possibly so she doesn’t have to be the one to do it, and possibly so she can reinforce her previous beliefs about herself as being unlovable and undeserving of love.
As the audience, we have more appreciation for her toxic behavior and where it comes from. I kind of doubt Asher does. But unless the guy really, really likes her, or is aware of her trauma and doesn’t want her to be self-destructive, or is aware of her trauma and is invested in her finding redemption because he too cares about finding that himself… this is a lot of BS for a relationship to deal with.
i thin kshe did mention ‘i was always on teh other side of the playground’ so i imagine they prolly at least saw him while he was hanging around with sal?

See, I don’t really feel like that’s Asher’s wish, though. He seems almost disproportionately well-adjusted. I could see him seeking redemption, but not destruction. He’s not clinging to Billie like she’s his one ticket to redemption, though, as far as I can tell; he’s in the process of escaping from his family’s influence, and other than getting blackmailed last semester into getting the fire alarm pulled, and then admittedly having Blaine murdered for being a threat (to both him personally but also to his family) (…but it’s also Blaine, and as much as I am not pro-murder even of people who have done deeply evil things, I also recognize that this was at worst a fairly grey use of Asher’s mob contacts…), he doesn’t feel like he’s at particular risk of backsliding on his own.
