          They don’t always know, though. I had a friend who ended up with herpes, even though she’d come into the relationship a virgin and they’d been monogamous (with condoms) for two years.

          Ended up he was a non-symptomatic carrier. Could have been avoided if he’d had a blood test before they stopped using the condoms, but since he hadn’t ever presented symptoms of anything, it didn’t occur to them.

          It’s not like STDs are spontaneously generated when unprotected sex occurs. Given that I’m pretty sure the full extent of these two’s sexual contact network is the two of them plus Dorothy, I don’t think they really need to worry about STDs.

          Amber is a socially withdrawn freshman in college. Her only friend as a kid was Ethan, who we know she never had sexual interactions with for obvious reasons. She stayed with him for quite some time before they split apart, at which point she returned to being a social recluse hiding out in her room all the time. Though we do know she knows Mike, and that they were a thing in shortpacked, still, that’s there and this is here.

          I think we have a very firm grasp on Amber’s sexual history, it’s Danny that is uncertain actually, Danny himself has only had sex with Dorothy, but Dorothy’s past is a total blank, who knows, maybe she dated someone before Danny and picked something up with no visible symptoms, then passed it onto him without realizing. Unlikely, but a bit more likely than Amber having ever had sex (unless her father raped her or something, but that’s evil even for him)

          I’m almost certain – because her sexual frustration is one of the issues driving the Amber/Amazi-Girl divide – that her abortive encounter with Ethan on prom night was the closest Amber got to getting laid up to the night Amazi-Girl and Danny didn’t get it on only because her costume made it difficult.

          We know Dorothy took Danny’s virginity. We saw their breakup, we know what Danny’s been up to since (a close encounter with Billie, but I don’t think either of them got their pants off), and I find it completely inconceivable that Danny could have been with anyone else while dating Dorothy. Dorothy cheating on Danny is maybe not completely impossible, but I find that extremely unlikely as well.

          It’s true that we don’t know for certain Dorothy’s history before she dated Danny, but given how long they dated before they had sex (two years; compare to the three weeks it took her and Walky), I suspect Danny took Dorothy’s virginity as well. Even if not, I think her comment about finding guys who aren’t virgins implies that anyone she might have slept with before Danny was also a virgin, so that only maybe extends the network by a dude or two before closing it off that way, too.

          And, yeah, herpes, but condoms aren’t reliable protection against herpes anyway. Hell, abstinence isn’t reliable protection against herpes.

          A lot of people have herpes without knowing it (especially HIV1, which 80% of the population has) and can contract it orally without sexual contact (e.g. being kissed on the cheek by a relative).

          It still should be standard practice going into a sexual relationship for you both to get tested. If nothing else, not all STDs are -only- transmitted through sexual conduct. Danny’s doctor could have mixed up needles, or he could’ve accidentally used Joe’s toothbrush. It’s unlikely, (especially since I imagine Joe is pretty careful himself) but the smart thing is just to never take it for granted.

          STDs don’t always present symptoms; some of them don’t even show up in blood tests for like six months after infection. Best bet is to assume someone has been exposed and doesn’t know it, and use condoms and get a blood test before you go off them. A blood test could have saved my friend from a really nasty, permanent issue, but because he wasn’t presenting any symptoms, unfortunately they both assumed he was clean.

          personally, a lot of the reason I was pushing amazi-girl/danny so hard in the first place was because there were less issues around consent and power than with sal/jason, and no matter what, david was going to do a slipshine with one of the pairings, but whatever you want to assume about me or anyone else is fine, I guess

          I don’t assume anything about you, I simply find your taste in pairings to be a tad icky in it’s current state.

          Though I am disturbed you find the supposed power difference (though Sal has physically dominated him the entire time, and it’s been pointed out if they get caught she gets a slap on the wrist and he gets fired, not to mention he didn’t even change her grades over it to begin with so he’s literally wielding nothing over her) more offputting than a woman who had a complete psychological breakdown, is dependent on an alternate persona to properly control her emotions, has traumatic flashbacks just seeing certain people and has displayed an irrational and uncontrollable tendency to turn to violence when she gets upset.

          If Amber and Danny were about to bang AFTER she’d seen a therapist or even just given up Amazi-Girl as a separate life I’d have the same reaction to this as I have the last two, mild curiousity towards any unseen character development and indifference towards the sex. As things stand my reaction is ‘ew, just no, not now‘. Though I will concede Danny/Amber in any form is more interesting than Sal/Jason, as there’s literally nothing but sex between them.

          I’m uncomfortable with danny using amber to deal with his sexual insecurities, and I’m generally uneasy with everything going on to begin with, but at least they’re both students, at least there isn’t that inherent power differential behind their relationship

          I know what you’re saying, but maybe I have a useful perspective on this: I was a math TA and then a math professor for years.

          I would never, never have sex with a student while he or she was in any of my classes, even if that student initiated the relationship. It is incredibly inappropriate: not only does it raise questions of favoritism, but it opens the door to other, less appropriate, relationships. If Jason had really wanted Sal, then he could and should have waited; it he didn’t, then he should have gently but firmly said “no.”

          Actually, that was one of the main reasons I thought it might fly.

          From a meta perspective, Danny’s been set up from the beginning as being this super devoted, eyes-laser-focused-on-one-true-love dude. (I think Willis called him a serial monogamist somewhere.) And, well, it hasn’t served him as well in his relationships as one would expect. Since it’s a college coming-of-age type story, I wouldn’t be surprised if part of it was Danny growing and changing and learning that he doesn’t have to be that person he was when he got here, and that he can like multiple people and it’s not that big a deal.

He’s pretty vocally supportive about LGBT+ stuff (understatement of the year), but I can’t remember him saying much about poly, and long-term poly relationships at that.

          I mean, I still think this situation is fucked up, but not really any more than Sal/Jason (which I like alot), and certainly less than Billie/Ruth.

          It’s really because this situation touches a nerve with me in a way the others don’t. Amber trying to project this idealized persona of herself, not knowing how to deal with her anger, preferring people’s disdain and indifference to their sympathy, minimizing her past traumas, ignoring and avoiding talking about her problems… I identify more closely with these than with the other characters’ issues. And since I know personally how destructive they are, I’m really uncomfortable with Amber and Danny romanticizing Amazi-girl, who embodies all these problems. When Amber and Danny are ready to just be Amber and Danny, warts and all, that’s a different story.

          So I know logically romanticizing alcoholism or a t.a./student relationship isn’t any better but I instinctively find it alot less squicky and alot more sexy than this.

    While this is going to end in disaster, I at least want to appreciate Amber being in the best state we’ve seen her all comic. She’s in a great mood, and she (seems to) take both Danny’s hesitance and his belief that he’s “unfaithful” in stride and with respect. The Amber we first met would have panicked at Danny’s reaction. The Amber who beat her dad to a pulp would have assumed Danny meant he’d slept with Sal, and turned into a mass of sobs and rage.

    But this is David “Damn You Willis” Willis, so I give this great mood another two comics, then it all comes crashing down when Danny cries out Ethan’s name in a fit of passion.
