          The difference is: he doesn’t do it because he believes those things are true. He does it because those are the things that would hurt those people the most. He’s, in this very strip, trying to casually seduce the unsuspecting Ethan to make Danny jealous mad, and cause relationship drama. All awful things to do! But not exactly “alt-right” (that’s the proper way to write those words, btw) – he’s not aligned with any ideology except maximum human suffering. If supporting abortion and gay-rights and being nice to people was what would hurt his target the most – he’d do those things with equal committment – the difference is simply in how those actions “look”

    Panel One: Oh joy, more of Mike trying to get in Ethan’s pants so he can subsequently destroy him and make Danny jealous, because that’s not horrible and abusive and predatory at all.

    Also, really Mike? Out of sad online dorks to argue with? In THIS day and age? Step up your game, it’s clearly very weak.

    And good for Ethan for not just taking it.

    Panel Two: No need for the quotes around ex, Mike. Doomed to fail or no, they DID date. She’s just his ex. Same as Amber. And considering your part in driving him back into the closet, you’ve lost your right to mock it forever.

    And yeah, oh dear, Leslie is sooooooooooo not getting to ignore this ever. Sorry, Leslie. Not sorry, Robin, you had some sort of backlash coming.

    Panel Three: Uh huuuuuuh. There are different gender studies teachers. So apparently Leslie’s name isn’t out there yet. That’s good for her. But yes, media circus and Robin’s credibility is likely shot. And Ethan and Mike are connecting it to Joyce’s class, which shows Ethan’s capacity for friendship and Mike’s capacity for remembering things about people he can use against them. As for Ethan, he’s definitely not overtly concerned – can’t possibly be the same one. (Yes, it can, everything in this story ties to them eventually).

    Panel Four: Oh dear. So it won’t be long until they get a name for Leslie. And yeah, this is going to be a huge news day all around. Hopefully they end up okay. And by they I mean Leslie and her students. And Mike, no, you get out of Ethan’s face. Ethan’s a cinnamon roll who doesn’t deserve your evil schemes.

    Panel Five: *snorts* Oh Daisy. Your hormones are driving you up the wall, aren’t they? And yeah, this story must be like candy to her. It’s everything she’s wanted – and a chance to bring down DeSanto? Oh my. Women liking women and the chance to take shots at the asshole making LGBT+ people’s situation worse? Yeah, this will occupy the IDS for, like, ever.

    ….Are we sure Daisy’s a student? I thought since she was senior editor she was a faculty member. If she’s faculty, can they go out? If not….sorry, Daisy. Maybe if things with Malaya and Marcie don’t work out? Sierra, maybe? There’s gotta be plenty of ladies who like ladies on campus.

          I don’t recall Mike planning on humiliating him. Causing lots of drama, yes. Seducing him, yes. But you know, Ethan has known Mike a lot longer than you or I. I suspect he’s not going to have any illusions about who Mike is.
          But Danny is the actual target of the drama.

        Out of curiosity, is Lesbians being desperate to comedic lengths a trope? No real fault to this comic, which itself features many others. It just seems kind of a familiar bit – but I can’t quite place where it’s come up.

          Pretty much yeah. The joke is that they’re lesbians and obsessed with sex because wanting to bang someone of the same gender is gross and weird and therefore prime material for comedy.

          Daisy is a cardboard cutout with the word ‘lesbian’ written in crayon, but she’s surrounded by complex and interesting queer women, so she becomes a lighthearted fun character rather than a dumb gag, the way she would if she were the only queer lady in the cast.

          I’d imagine it also helps that she generally seems competent when not discussing wlw or pretty girls. She functions as Billie and Dorothy’s boss and so she has a role outside just ‘lolz lesbians are horny’. It’s just that because we rarely see her, her horniness sticks out more.

    You know, ultimately I feel sort of sorry for Mike.

    Later, I’ll feel sorry for Ethan, if this works and has half the splash damage Mike seemed to want out of it. And certainly my feeling sorry for Mike right now is not because I somehow think he’s not a bastard.

    But there’s just something about the way that Mike keeps attacking anyone who tries to be his friend. Like, there’s just no interpretation of his character in this situation that isn’t profoundly sad to me.

    I’m not saying anyone needs to feel bad for Mike. I’m not saying that, even should it turn out that all of this is motivated by desperate loneliness, it will somehow be okay, or make him less of a terrible friend.

    This is much more in the vein of, if you keep driving your friends away, you eventually end up miserable and alone. Which is sad, even if it’s also sadness you completely deserve.

    This universe only has, like, 12 people in it. Everything they do is somehow inextricably intertwined with everybody else.

    Once they start realizing that, they’ll all start to slowly go insane.
