The funny thing about the mullet is that I have never heard that hairstyle been called by that name before the ’00s.

Also, AFAIK the mullet is banned in Iran. Literally.

Of course, that also means it’s popular in Iran. North Korea didn’t have to single out the mullet as a hairstyle to ban.

It occurs to me, though, that a good sense of the difference between confidence and bragging is in how much of the TAUGHT material you demonstrate, vs. how much you ALREADY KNEW.

For instance, I have a buddy who drew comics to illustrate his homework for a foreign language class. The teacher couldn’t give him bonus points, because that wasn’t part of the lesson plan.

Similarly, Amber is (unintentionally) making it harder for Alex, job or no. Amber turning in her assignment separate from everyone else means he has to keep track of it independently, and “I could do that in five minutes” is a universal dismissal of difficulty.

This isn’t to point fingers and who is “right” and “wrong”–just to point out that Hell is other people, so fuck socializing.

It probably doesn’t help that you’re a girl, Amber. Girls have a harder line to walk in the bragging area.

Yeah — the rule seems to be that if you’re female, you’re not allowed to accept a compliment directly given to you; and god forbid you volunteer a thing about yourself that you’re good at, even if it’s relevant to the situation.

It’s worth noting that, between the two universes, Danny has had Dorothy, Amber, Ethan, and Sal interested in him physically or romantically, if not more.

He’s not as much of a slouch, physically, as we might think he is by his self-deprecation.

        1. Dirk Strider's Splinter Hopeself

          11/19/2014, 12:19 am

Danny is merely self-deprecational to an unhealthy degree- I know that feeling myself, actually. I constantly insult aspects of myself that are perfectly fine, and therefore my companions seem to get some impression it’s true, despite the obvious joking.

At my worst, I mostly just come across as a bloodthirsty nutter with an overinflated ego, like some kind of real-life munchkin.
It’s usually funny, until I glance at the wall clock and some poor girl thinks I’m glaring at her with a nonverbal promise to murder her.

          11/19/2014, 12:34 am

You only do that because you stole the technique from me. Stone cold low self esteem and self deprecatory remarks since 1967.

Okay, okay, 1976. It took a few years to develop.

If my clients knew how little I think of myself I’d never have another case.

I would posit – with the premise that I am perhaps extremely wrong – that many writers picture or somehow, at least put a bit of their own personalities into anything they do. As I do not know the writer/drawer of this in real life, and as such, I can only suppose, but.. I picture Danny as the superimposed version of Willis, were he in any of these situations. Perhaps he has another, perhaps none are correct, and all are simply various reflections of various traits of his personality (which, upon retrospect, seems more correct). But.. Danny is commonly the one who fucks things up, and seems powerless to correct them and, again, mentioning the “I might be wrong” thing – but with how many things are fucked up in this universe, especially amongst the individuals, I’m thinking perhaps it is a little of both – Danny fucks things up the most, but everyone else fucks things up in their own way.. this seems to be a comic based mostly on regrets. Now, mind you, I have been following this comic for a while now, yet only recently started posting semi-regularly – as I said earlier, I could be completely wrong. …holy shit am I Willis too? GAHHHHH!

And Danny… you’re adorable and so on, but that “what you see in a guy like me” line is just one tiny step from a passive-aggressive demand for attention. Watch yourself buddy.

‘I don’t know why you bother with a guy like me’ is often actually a sign of low self-esteem and is an attack towards yourself – it isn’t passive-aggressive towards other people because it isn’t hostile in intent – it is a sign that they are feeling insecure with themselves, and that they can’t see what is attractive about themselves.

That’s certainly true, but so is what I said. It’s close to a passive-aggressive bid for attention fueled by low self esteem. Note how that comment changed the topic of discussion from Amber to Danny.

Not that Amber ever uses shady tactics on Danny to get attention…

I think Alex’s anger is not directed at Amber. It’s not her fault that neither of them get to skip this course. She’s just making his job harder, reminding him of what he could be doing instead.

If a bright, enthusiastic student who is ahead of the course makes the teacher’s job harder they are missing part of their job description. There will always be a student like that, part of the teacher’s job is learning how to challenge them, just as part of the job is to learn how to support those who are behind…

HTML5? If you mean window.print, no, it has been in the DOM since “level 0” i.e. since Netscape first created Javascript. And as Dirk says, it brings up a print dialog, and whatever Amber did didn’t do that.

I’ll see your Doogie Howser and raise you Full House, which I instantly recognised without realizing it when some asshole put it in a shitty mix and a “friend” played it after cutting off my playlist of REAL music [me: “Why am I suddenly thinking of Full House?”]

luckily, the mix repeated only a couple of stanzas, so if I genuinely try to remember the theme, it gets overwritten by Family Matters

Insufficient information to answer the alt-text. I have no idea how good a liar Maggie is.

Panel four certainly brings back memories of the Willis-proposes-to-Maggie strip in Shortpacked, though.

first two panels are how i feel about doing most things around people. 🙁 i can’t mimic the way other people do them and always do them wrong… social anxiety is the worst.

    poor amber 🙁

I’m very much like Danny in the fourth panel, my wife even says something similar when i’m feeling down (except the hair, when it comes to the hair I’m more like Jason Statham)

GOD i feel Amber so bad right now

like whenever i think i did a good job on something i cannot tell the difference between showing confidence and bragging which leads to people trying to knock me down a peg which is the opposite of what i need. I FEEL U GIRL.

I must say I’m intrigued by how Amber is managing to text Danny’s phone from her DS.

They could be emailing or something. She could even be texting him through her email. The 3DS has internet.

I think her phone is a slide-up phone, you know, those things that reveal a keboard?
