      Really disliking how Willis has handled Mary in DoA. At least she actually had some depth in Roomies. Now she’s too much like SP! Malaya (prior to hooking up with Ultra Car), just sorta being around to be unlikable and bongoy.

          All I remember happening is when she learned she hit a home run with a guy she met, then lashed out at Danny in a violent rage, blaming him for it, and having no further appearances in Roomies! after that. When Sal was on the run in It’s Walky, she broke into Mary’s house, and once Mary learned Sal wasn’t here to kill her, she went right back into her trademark predatory Yuppie Church Lady mode, gloating about how she was married with a bun in the oven, and how it all must be divine favor for being oh so holier than thou or whatever. Sal then called her out on what a lousy friend she was back when they were in high school, causing Mary to call her an “Ungrateful bongo” with an intense ‘HOW DARE YOU!!’ look on her face. Her hubby came into the scene, causing things to cease to escalate, Sal left, Mr. Mary brought up that it was probably the legally responsible thing to do to notify the authorities. His wife agreed while darting her large eyes to her left with an expression on her face like a thief who had just been caught in the act. After that, I have no further memory of her involvement with the rest of the cast.
          I must have missed something. Archives anyone can recommend?

          Hmmmm…The good taste in clothes didn’t start in DoA, I stand corrected.

          Far more of a voyeur than I remember…’Yandere’ would describe her.

          I did gather her predatory behavior was motivated by extreme self-inflicted insecurity. Figure Raidah’s desperate control / demagoguery issues with her relationships are motivated by the same.

          DoA Mary is still a bit of a time bomb, but not a STEALTH time bomb like the original. The Mary of this strip isn’t catching anyone by surprise with how she turns out to have problems having this new musk ox brand of subtlety.

        I kind of like this new oaf of a Mary, despite how she may not be explored much further, beyond serving as everyone else’s foil, that is. The original Mary…….Let’s just say I’m absolutely terrified for her child.

        I’ll take the tall, snappy-dresser, occasionally put-upon malcontent Mary over that.

        Here’s a relevant question: how many strips has she been in as opposed to how much attention has she received by the comic? You can’t have character depth and development if a character is hardly shown.

        2. Ruth is left-handed.
        3. Mary has to be walking in the opposite direction when she leaves so that the action is clear. The slap also has to be on the side facing us.

          I’m still a bit confused. Her… artwork in this comic does not seem to be such a masterpiece that it could not have been drawn with either hand, so her handedness isn’t all that relevant to the act of drawing itself.

          The confusion is that the comic appears to portray 1) Ruth drawing on her right hand with her left hand 2) A left(?) handprint on the right side (opposite left) of Mary’s face.

          And the handedness isn’t necessarily a potential clue – this is set in a country that uses a writing system that goes to the right, so “right” and “forward” are arguably conflated in people’s minds regardless of what hand they draw with.

          My initial reading was that Ruth didn’t slap across the face, she made a straight push against Mary’s face. While the slap marks do indicate that the left hand was used to slap, the lack of a thumb mark makes it easier to confuse the left and right hands.

          You could probably make it less of a sacrifice if you change the hand-mark to be a right hand still on the right side of Mary’s face; it’ll have been a somewhat weird way to slap someone, but it’ll not involve hands suddenly being mirrored.

          Though note in future that there is NO way to slap someone on the face so that it leaves a palm print on one side of their face and a thumb mark on the other without breaking their nose in the process.

          Step 1: Google Image “slap to the face”
          Step 2: GET PRACTICING ON YOUR SLAP DRAWINGS!
          Step 3: recieve nothing important in relation to this except a smug sense of self satisfaction comparable to the one that people get when pointing out errors in your art.

          Purely out of curiosity to see how hard it would be to fix, I took a stab at it. It took me about an hour, and I messed up Mary’s hair in like three or four different ways, mainly the direction of the hair in the middle and the pointy-bit I ended up making on the right, but it does fix the problem of which cheek the smack mark is on.

          Mr. Willis, it’s really your art, so let me know if you want me to delete that.

      As someone whos done this before, the trick is draw it on your right with a wet marker, clap your hands and smack the hell out of someone with your stamped hand. The mark can be washed off your hands easy but the slapped one is in for some heavy scrubbing.

Not sure if it’s entirely evident here, but I’m betting it’s feeding into her outrage. And then she uses their lack of rage as proof that they’re terrible people.

    She’s not wrong of course, Ruth is a terrible RA and something should be done about it. That something is not screaming in her face but reporting her to her superiors.

        She’s Mary. She’s narcissistic. She thinks everything that is important to her is, or should be, important to everyone. She also thinks she’s perfection itself and that anyone with the brains God gave a goat would agree with her.
        And going along with her narcissistic tendencies, when neither of these expectations are met she loses complete control of her emotions and flies off the handle.

        So, I doubt she did any real thinking about it before screaming at Ruth. And if she did any thinking about it before approaching Ruth about the topic initially, she didn’t think much beyond feeling certain that her incredibly fake nice-nicey, sweet-as-honey approach would get Ruth to see the light and do as Mary asks/demands.

        Willis said up-thread that basically it had to happen that way because Ruth is left-handed, because we need to see at least most of Mary’s face as she’s leaving, and if Mary and left by going to the right of the panel, rather than the left, it would read like she was walking toward Ruth and/or just generally be confusing.

        I figure it came down to either 1) Have Ruth write/draw with her right hand this one time or 2) have the hand print and dick drawing be on the wrong side of Mary’s face.
        Since being left-handed is actually a pretty major character trait for Ruth, maybe on par with her red hair, and that it had been mentioned earlier in this storyline that any left-handed persons couldn’t be the ding-dong bandit, it makes sense that Willis would go with Option #2.

    I love how Mary focused on the “nothing” in Ruth’s response and completely disregarded the “right now” part which implied that Ruth will be doing something at some point. She just zeroed in on whatever vindicates her negative expectations without any expectation of Ruth ever redeeming herself in Mary’s eyes (which is probably impossible, as hatefilled as Mary appears to be.)

    I’m sure Ruth has something in mind for the whiteboard issue, and she will see to it in the fullness of time. It’s not like RAs aren’t students, too.

    I like Ruth in strips where there is no hint of her duties as an RA, but then when I see strips like this… I just can’t stand people who abuse their power. If you can’t handle power, don’t take a position of power. Ruth has obviously had a shit life. That doesn’t mean it’s OK for her to go around abusing her position whenever she feels like it. Lucky for her that Billie ended up falling in love with her so all’s forgiven (plus Billie ended up being crappy back to her, but NOT from a position of power), but I still haven’t forgotten that she’s a bully, a thief, and incompetent at her job. I hope she deservedly loses her position so I can just enjoy the rest of her character and watch her develop as a person without hating her. And I don’t even like Mary. I just hate people who take advantage of what they can get away with.

      Yeah, both she and Mike press my buttons… in a way that Mike doesn’t over on Shortpacked. I think it’s because, while this is a comic strip, it’s more grounded than the other. It’s not that someone pulled a “drama tag” accidentally releasing the drama, but that this started out with the kind of grounding that wouldn’t randomly have an Ultracar character.

      In a “real world” kind of setting, Ruth isn’t acceptable and Mike is a serious threat.

        Yeah, Mike is a little weirder to get now since he is just a “normal” 18-year-old, not a real-life troll with basically magical abilities. Overall, DoA is just more grounded, which is great! It deals with a lot of real-life issues, which I love. I’m just still waiting for the payoff with Ruth’s RA business. I get that she tried to redeem herself by getting Billie another cheerleading outfit, but it’s like… oh, thanks for replacing the outfit YOU stole (through the keys you have to everyone’s rooms, what a responsible person you are) AND cut up with ANOTHER stolen outfit, awesome. Most everything else has consequences in DoA, so I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop here. And then she wants to talk about consequences of actions with Billie – oh, please. Don’t make me laugh.

      I’m relieved to see other people react negatively to the sickening way Ruth abuses power… Maybe I’m just taking the comic too seriously, and of course some if the abuse is recognized, since the unhealthy element was an essential characteristic of her relationship with Billie, but still: so many people cheer her on when she gets oppressive, it’s a little scary. Sure, Mary is HORID, but her lack of authority (and I’m guessing, friends) makes her less of a threat I guess

          The way I see it…biological sex is completely irrelevant to anything that doesn’t involve a doctor’s visit. The only thing that matters in everyday life is gender presentation, regardless of what parts someone has or used to have.

          Also, this whole “not all trans people have dysphoria” needs to stop. Sure, “dysphoria” might mean any number of things, not all of which are physical (mine was mostly the “emotional fog” type, which cleared up completely after a week of more spiro than I should’ve been on), but the bare-minimum requirement to be trans is to have some kind of dysphoria.

Though the associations between gender and sex are clearly a social construct, and rigid categories of sex are constructed as well, they might still be helpful to designate phenotypes if not genotypes?           labeling bodies “male” and “female” doesn’t actually tell you that much about an individual’s body, especially if said individual is trans
          what about trans women with breasts and penises, who are taking estrogen?
          what about intersex people who can have all KINDS of bodies that are not accurately summed up with the blanket term “intersex”?
          pretty much, there’s too much variation among humans for sexual dimorphism to make sense, so there’s no real point in gendering anatomy

          The “title” for comics has traditionally been a word or phrase in the strip itself that serves as a shorthand for its contents and a “spoiler” to append to the comic’s filename to prevent people from just casually browsing through the buffer by manually changing the image location URL.

          This one is about Mary and her “male anatomy” “”concerns””. I don’t think it’s meant to be at all indicative of Willis’s own beliefs any mor e than Mary herself is.

          If you think me trying to “lay down the law” concerning what is wrong about what my characters are doing is going to affect anybody who already disagrees with me, pardon my irreverence, but you are super new here aintcha. Talking specifically and out-of-universe about Sal’s race issues just made dissenters louder and more obnoxious. Just on yesterday’s page, I clarified for the thirteen billionth time that Dorothy did not break up with Danny just so she could concentrate on her studies. It won’t be the last. I still get Tumblr asks about how I’m only continuing to make comics about Sal and her parents to “artificially cram” the issue into the narrative in response to specific people, and therefore it’s a storyline that can’t be taken at face value and is full of lies.

          I can’t make anybody do anything. It will not make people argue less. It will embolden jerks and frustrate me.

          Let me give another perspective: Annotating Roomies! for two years was exhausting. There is so much problematic in it, and I became increasingly neurotic about attempting to point out each and every single terrible thing suggested in it. I’ve got sixty thousand pairs of eyes on me every night, and there are so many ways to fail any percentage of them. It’s overwhelming. I lost sleep, thinking I might have missed something, and that in the morning I’d get up to angry emails from folks who were concerned that I hadn’t called something out specifically as being wrong. If you lampshade everything that you think is wrong in a work, then isn’t not lampshading something an implicit endorsement?

          But you know what, screw that. I can’t live that way. Sometimes my characters will say awful things. They are fictional characters, with flaws. And I will not point it out every single time. I will not.

          Especially when it’s Mary. That’d just be exhausting.

          That said, I thought you folks here were handling it better than I would have anyway. This is not actually a topic I know well enough to provide links and explanations. I have tried, actually, to point out similar things on other boards when people said things I thought were cissexist, but ended up getting properly shut down by an actual transgender person who I can’t rightfully argue with.           you don’t need to be able to win internet arguments about this shit. u just need to listen to ppl who know what they’re talking about, as it seems u have, and address these things within the narrative, however briefly. lemme just tell u that your handling of sal’s character wrt being mixed resonated with me very deeply and i appreciate you greatly for that. you don’t need to give any lectures or explain anything in great depth. again, you just need to address it within the narrative. call attention to the issue, and that’ll be enough.

          it won’t change everyone’s mind; it probably won’t change most ppl’s. but it might make some think, and it’d certainly make me personally a lot more comfortable as a fan of this comic.

          You can make up new terms, but for the duration of the English language, ‘Male’ and ‘Female’ have referred to the shape of a persons funny bits and some other various biological differences. Adding an alternate definition to a word and then acting offended when people use the traditional definition is simply seeking out ways to be offended.

          I definitely know that transgender individuals face a lot of bigotry and cissexism, but this seems awfully pedantic to me. One needs to pick their battles, (Advice I should probably take myself…), and accusing people of cissexism or bigotry because they use a traditional definition of the word is not a battle to be fought.

          Back to my original point though, WORDS CAN HAVE MULTIPLE DEFINITIONS. In this case, ‘Male’ refers to a biological form which human beings can take. The only way it is offensive is if you intentionally misinterpret her meaning or else ignore the intended definition.
          I’ll agree that we don’t have enough words to define gender (Biological and psychological) properly, but what we do have is a pair of words (Male and Female) which encompass a wide array of definitions. If you’re going to argue that Male and Female should exclusively be used to describe indentified gender, then… Well… I guess you’d better write a letter to Webster and ask them to please remove a bunch of definitions so that your offense can be justified when people use the term ‘Male’ to mean ‘Person with an X and Y chromosome.’

          Sorry if this comes out as condescending, but the idea that I’m not allowed to use a medical term to describe a body part without offending someone is ludicrous to me.

          I already read that and find that argument to be bullshit for various reasons, but I’m tired and need to get some sleep so I’ll keep things short:

          First, biological, binary gender HAS to exist, because otherwise our species would either reproduce asexually or cease to exist. Neither has happened to my knowledge. If you can’t be a part of the baby-making process, you’re out of the gene pool.

          Surgical alterations should not be included in a discussion about what constitutes as biological gender, because it still doesn’t change genetics, nor does it change what I’ll call your ‘Factory setting.’ You were still BORN with biological gender.

          There are, of course, exceptions. Certain birth defects can cause people to be born without one gender or another. However, saying that I can’t use Male or Female to describe people genetically because there are exceptions is like saying I can’t call something a Car or a Boat because there are other modes of transportation. You don’t get rid of all terms because you have something different, you MAKE UP A NEW WORD.

          Lastly… Let’s consider, for the sake of metaphor, Ibuprofin. (I may have spelled that wrong.) It can be used to treat various symptoms and illnesses, but in 999 cases out of 1000 it is used for headaches.
          Now let’s say I’m religiously bound never to say the word Ibuprofin, or it at least makes me uncomfortable.
          Can I call it ‘Headache Medicine?’ Or, because there is that one case in a thousand where the term doesn’t apply, do I have to call it Ibuprofin? If I say ‘Headache Medicine’ and point at a bottle of Ibuprofin, everyone will know what I’m talking about. There’s no loss ofclarity. So am I allowed to use the defining trait of an object to define something?

          What do you need to be qualified as female? Or male? As a general rule, though, no matter what I say you’ll come up with a contradiction or exception, so I’ll say this: Males and Females tend towards two various sets of traits. However, the defining factor is either the ability to make babies or the ability to fertilize those who make babies. At it’s core, that is what biological gender is. If you have some condition or defect rendering you exempt from these, you’ll still usually have all the right parts.

          If a person doesn’t have any defining traits, though, or has a conflicting set, then no, they aren’t biologically male or female. Fortunately though, there is a word for that! Hermaphrodite covers those with male and female parts, I can’t recall what other terms may exist but I know there are other terms. So no, you aren’t male or female, but that doesn’t mean you’re excluded because IT’S NOT A BINARY SYSTEM.

          Lastly, why is it important? Because science! Male and female bodies tend towards different conditions. Women get breast cancer more often. Men have heart conditions more frequently. Gender is important from a medical standpoint because it gives information from which you can make a diagnosis. Furthermore, if (for example) a man who identifies as female comes in with vague symptoms, knowing his biological gender will help rule out certain problems. It’s likely not ovarian cancer, it might be a hormonal imbalance… If the doctor has to test for each problem individually, running scans for organs that don’t exist, that’s an issue. As for those who undergo surgery, that’s why we keep medical records.

          Call it whatever you like, there are two sets of person-types in the world who have certain sets of physical traits. There are exceptions, as you will find in any set of 6 Billion things, but those two sets exist and you simply can’t pretend they don’t by citing the one-in-a-million cases which we also have words for.

          I’m sorry, what? I’ve mentioned several times that I recognize Transphobia is a real issue, and I’m debating this point alone because it’s so incredibly petty. I’m not advocating hate-speech, I’m saying that you should be able to use the words ‘Male’ or ‘Female’ without requiring a thesaurus and a ten-minute clarification.

          If you want to deal with Transphobia, there are many things you can do. Spread awareness of issues, run campaigns, volunteer at shelters. But when you attack someone over tiny and petty issues in terminology and speech you’re not getting anywhere. I’ve also stated that I believe we should have more numerous and specific terms for different genders, but this won’t be accomplished by forbidding people from using the words we already have. You can’t have progress in identifying different types of sexuality and gender identity by telling other people they can’t refer to things by their gender.

          Can I bring up Star Wars? I’m gonna bring up Star Wars. In episode 6, The Emperor refers to a Lightsaber as a ‘Jedi Weapon’. Now, there are Jedi who don’t use Lightsabers. Very obviously there are Sith who DO us Lightsabers. But when he called it a ‘Jedi Weapon’ everyone knew exactly what he meant: It was a weapon commonly used by Jedi, and only seldom found elsewhere. He obviously didn’t mean it was 100% exclusive, seeing as his right-hand man was a Sith with a Lightsaber.
          Now replace ‘Jedi Weapon’ with ‘Male Anatomy’ and ‘Emperor’ with ‘Mary.’

          It’s worth noting that I identify as primarily asexual. I have a sex drive and I do seek romantic involvement, but the two don’t meet. I’ve yet to meet or see a person who I consider ‘sexy.’ To me, the entire ordeal of fleshy bits squishing together is just a little gross, so I consider the whole thing to be a purely biological imperative which, by nescessity, society has deemed immensely important to your identity. It’s not super relevant, but might help with understanding my perspective on this.

          That’s the thing, though: Nobody has stepped on your foot! Mary may be an incredible bongo, but her comment was in no way marginalizing of transsexuals or those with atypical biology. The Penis is an organ typically, but not exclusively and not always, found on biological males. Mary is apparently uncomfortable saying penis, so she used this fact to comment on the drawings without saying the actual word. She didn’t say ‘Exclusively Male organ.’ Do I need to bring up the Star Wars metaphor again? It’s not an exclusive statement, nor a completely inclusive statement that has absolutely nothing to do with transsexualism, sexual or gender identity, or anything else similar.

          If I refer to a Cross as a ‘Christian symbol’, I’m not saying that the shape of the cross doesn’t have other meanings, nor that it’s exclusively used by Christians, I’m saying that it is commonly associated with Christian imagery because it is prevalent. I won’t, however, take the effort to say ‘Christian symbol, with roots in Roman history and their preferred execution method, as well as a mere marking of two lines perpendicular to each other.’ Why? Because it’s ludicrous, unnecessary, and everyone already knows what I’m talking about. They know that I’m not stating this to exclude other uses, I’m simply talking about it in relation to one common comparison. If anyone thinks that my statement is intentionally snubbing all other uses and history of a Cross, then they are very clearly misinterpreting my meaning, which is not my fault.

          This isn’t someone stepping on your foot on purpose. This isn’t someone stepping on your foot on accident. This is you, seeing someone walking, and jamming your foot underneath theirs so that you can yell at them for it.

    I’m referring to the comments sections where the opinion is generally “She deserved to have someone hit her”

    I’m guessing the rationale is that nobody likes her character and therefore its okay for people to hit her.

    If she was a popular character (Joyce maybe) and someone hit her, there would be cries of FOUL!

    Its just an eye-opening attitude.

      Anyway, yes, it is a comic about HAVING BAD JUDGEMENT. Badness happening to bad people is satisfying, though, however we “should not” let it happen in real life [but because in real life, there “should not” be “villains” the way people sometimes want there to be to justify getting revenge].

    …I think I’m the only one who focused more on the joke than the artwork…I don’t mind that the hand print is “wrong” or whatever. It’s still a funny joke. Y’all need to sit down and enjoy the comic instead of pulling your hair out over a mistake that Willis knows about, and doesn’t intend to change for logical reasons.

      I kinda sorta noticed it, but it’s like being cut off in traffic–you can either let it ruin your day, or you can realize it’s not really anything in the grand scheme of things and anyway there are better things to focus on. Like that Mary got a punishment that fits the crime =D [if on the slightly severe end]

    I hope Mary has some redeeming qualities. It’s not good for someone to have that much hate in them. I have to wonder, why is she like that? The backstories are…not good.

      She hasn’t really displayed any so far. In many ways, Joyce and Mary are two sides of the same fundie coin. My sister,who is like Joyce has a way of dealling with her anger. It is to wish blessings on the people she’s angry at. She figures they need all the help they can get.

    Here’s a thought.
    Mary goes from polite and freindly to screaming insults in less than a minute. Ruth draws a dick on her hand as an extended “talk to the hand” insult. Mary (off-screen) attacks Ruth physically. Ruth slaps Mary in self defense.
    Mary obviously has rage issues, and it isn’t unheard of for someone to go from verbal to physical assault in the same encounter. Ruth has her own issues, and may be falling back on early(i.e. childhood) training on how to deal with someone like Mary.

    If the fact that Ruth “let” the whiteboards get defaced when she wasn’t present is “proof of her incompetence”, then how incompetent must you be to end up with your own face defaced the same way? (And yay! I get to check off “face defaced” from my weird-phrases-I-want-to-use-someday bucket list!)

    Also, oddly inappropriate smile in the first panel. Mary seems happy about the situation at first.

      I’m reading that smile as a “suck up” smile and the subsequent faces as “that sucking up didn’t go the way I wanted; revert to default personality” faces. Had a boss like that.

    Pro tip: if someone writes on your marker board with a permanent marker (like a sharpie) simply write over the permanent marks with a dry erase marker and wipe off the marks. Dry erase markers have a solvent in them that dissolves the permanent ink of a sharpie.

        I am unsure of how well dry erase markers remove fecal stains. It is probably best not to allow your dry erase boards to become stained with fecal matter.

    This is also something similar to the Phantom. What I mean in the comic, if the Phantom shakes your hand with the skull, you’re a friend and is under his watchful eye at all times, but if he strikes you, then you’re evil and the the mark stays with you for as long as you live. While I’m sure the drawing is washable, it implication is the same.

    I know Willis said it was an acceptable loss, but I wanted to see how one could pull this off. I came up with the possibility that Ruth clapped her hands to transfer the wet ink (since drawing with her off hand may leave the shape ambiguous) and then used her main hand to whap Mary (since hitting with her off hand may leave the shape ambiguous) which makes enough sense for me to be satisfied with it
