      Interesting fact (sorry – “interesting” fact, actually), Birdo was actually in Doki Doki Panic – unlike the player characters, the enemies weren’t reskinned for SMB2. So even though it was until the NA manual for SMB2 mentioned ‘thinks he’s a girl,’ Doki Doki Panic sound have the honor of having the first trans character.

      Maybe SMB2 gets credit for the first OPENLY trans character? Maybe I’m putting way too much thought into this…?

Dorothy is Amber’s old friend from college and is having sex with Mike and is being crushed on by Sarah. Amber is in turn being crushed on by Walky. Joe is totally fixated on Danny and Jason doesn’t give a fuck about anyone or anything except music. Ethan was Joyce’s old college professor, and is Mike’s accomplice. And nobody is 100% sure what Billie’s deal is, but she clearly has her own agenda.

          Whew.

        He definitely is a bit more jerkier, but in the Walky-verse he was in a vastly different place. In DoA, he’s done well in school, was able to go to college, and, most importantly, actually GOT the girl. In Walkyverse, at this point he was an aimless high school grad and lab assistant/glorified janitor who was completely overshadowed by his superpowered brother and politically powerful mother. It’s no wonder he has more confidence in this universe, and convince at 18 often comes out as jerkiness.

        This is why I love DoA so much. I can’t imagine reading it without the knowledge of the Walkyverse story lines. With that knowledge, it’s this amazing reconstruction and subversion of years and years of character development over four different strips! Otherwise it’s just a college dramedy gag strip. A great gag strip, mind you, but so much more when you Willis is able to fuck with these characters that were so carefully constructed before and turn them into something radically different and yet still just as good.

        Er…at this point I’ll end the fawning Willis-fanboy rant. (one last bit of butt kissing – Willis is just about the first cartoonist since Bill Watterson that has made me really consider a four panel comic strips as a legititmate medium for art and literature.)

        Walkyverse Walky could be a massive jerk at times, but the massive emotional trauma, especially in regards to Joyce, and his coping devices tended to keep that in check.

    I really REALLY hope we get to see Joyce’s dream tonight. I mean, she doesn’t have any real clear conceptualization of how heterosexual sex works, her idea of what various flavors of homosexual sex are like must be absolutely hilarious.

    coming to the realization that “gay people are normal people” is actually a really good way of putting the process of being educated past your sheltered experience. Regardless of what Joyce’s own sexuality is, getting punched in the face with the fact that gay people exist and are just people is a really strong growth moment.

    I don’t quite get the first part of the strip–seems like Billie’s equating the appreciation of others to sexual curiosity. Maybe she’s just pulling Joyce’s chain? Women notice others’ nice clothes, hair, etc., all the time without it being sexual. Guys notice stuff, too, but don’t always voice it. For example, there’s a guy at work whose beard, I think, is friggin’ awesome (it’s a lot longer than mine, so it looks like he could curl up in it and take a nap ;), but I haven’t told him that because I can’t think of a way to say it that doesn’t sound weird. It doesn’t mean I want to take him to bed, I just notice his beard is amazing.

    I’m glad, though, that Joyce is discovering that gay people are just normal people. I don’t personally know anyone IRL that’s gay, but the ability to treat any people group as ‘just people’ is part of growing up. It’s also part of the process of getting disentangled from Moral Majority-type thinking, getting free from being used as a tool by the Republican Party and similar interest groups. I haven’t met any Christians who are outspokenly anti-gay and quick to use the phrase ‘Sodom and Gomorrah’ who can logically explain why America wasn’t levelled to the ground by their version of ‘God’ decades ago. (Oh, wait, you have to have an open mind and actually know your Bible to answer that.)

      I definitely took it as Billie yanking her chain. And you’re a quieter man than me. I know this one guy who has the BEST chin/jawline. It looks good with or without scruff and I don’t hesitate to tell him so pretty much every time he changes his facial hair. Of course, that being said, he was pretty awkward the first few times I complimented him. But eh, what can you do.

      I think it’s mostly yanking her chain, with small amounts of jealousy thrown in (similar to telling Sal to go away when she took her jacket off at the beach, and being disappointed at how quickly Sal replaced her as Joyce’s new idol) with maybe a trace of projection of her own feelings.

      I might be over analyzing a bit…

        We’ll only know if anything happens between her and the RA. Nice analysis, though. Probably won’t surface either way until she uses Ruth’s absence to her advantage for the RA position and becomes worried about her… my prediction.

        I was really confused with her statement, too, especially because it has a question mark at the end. I thought she was trying to “Now, back to what *I* was talking about” as a really bad segue until Joyce responded, connecting the two for sure.

        Joyce’s paranoia was an interesting way to take this dilemma. Does that mean her next dream will be about Billie and her “thingy”?
