Yeah, Carla’s many emotional issues – extreme narcissism arising from crippling insecurity, a desperate need for attention, a fondness for warping reality with obvious falsehoods, etc. would be kind of endearing. However, given her frightful intellect and the fact she is set to inherit both vast wealth and control over major sources of public information instead make these defects terrifying, especially in the light of some recent examples of those with similar assets and qualities.
Fortunately she is both young and fictional, so we may laugh and draw joy from her foibles. Thus is mighty power of satire and Hiveworks webcomics.
I mean, the title of this arc is “Love Dares You To Change”
Clif
Don’t look at me. I’m still trying to figure out what Thus refers to in Survivor’s last sentence and why thus is mighty power.
Psychie
I think they were missing the word “the” before mighty, the sentence works if you mentally add it “Thus is the mighty power of satire and Hiveworks webcomics”, with “thus” referencing back to the previous sentence “so we may laugh and draw joy from her foibles.” It’s not the most common use of “thus” so I can see it causing confusion, and it does come across as kind of awkward phrasing, especially with the missing article, but it technically works.
Owlmirror
Yoi mist be mussung somethung.
Or, less snarkily: The letters “i” and “u” are right next to each other on most standard keyboard layouts. And, as noted, the word “the” was dropped. Thus, the sentence should probably read as: “This is the mighty power (&c)”
Psychie
I had considered that possibility, but I actually think “thus” works better in-context than “this” would, considering the joking attempt at overly grandiose speech going on there.
It’s almost as if private ownership of publicly available services is something we inherited from the feudal period instead of something that is actually conductive to good and efficient service and administration. Not that we quite figured out how to deal with alternatives either, just stating that we are dealt a pretty rough hand at this time in history.
well, charlie seems calm/fine with dating carla, so other than any insecurities hidden by posturing i don’t think it’d get too unhealthy compared to ruth/billiefer
I think it’s consistent enough for a daily comic (tho it’d be interesting if it was set at diff intervals versus the same time each day), i’m more of a manga reader overall so could be worse/at least there’s not like a 3 month hiatus/random disappearance or so
I think I was so used to it uploading later I wouldnt check til like 12:25 my time bc it just seemed to get later, so i was surprised when this page refreshed when i was clicking thru tabs lol
I’m… pretty sure they live in a different building? Although I can’t actually remember why I think that, so it’s possible my brain is just making things up.
I got the vibes from the story that they were farther away, but Raidah was eating in Read without a coat, but in the next strip she’s gone to Forest and has one.
Plus during the Do List story, Char is in the Read ground floor lobby with one of Joe’s so-sorry-donuts.
It probably does match the RL Curry, but other things about DoA Read Hall don’t match RL, so shrug-emoji.
HueSatLight
For some reason, I thought Asma said which wing she lived in, and it wasn’t Clark, but I can’t find it.
Maybe Sayid lives in this wing then.
Ditto. At this point I’m beginning to wonder if Charlie might have some form of dissociative disorder (not quite DID, but something more related to dissociating). This is more than just typical ADHD forgetfulness. I definitely get the forgetfulness, I’ll go into my kitchen, forget what I was looking for, go back to my room, and spontaneously remember what I wanted. Or I’ll forget a couple things from the grocery store.
But this straight up forgetting where she is in the moment is… a bit more concerning.
Yeah she is disabled, we gather that by now. If she was able to get to college and go to classes and Booster doesn’t have to be over her all the time, we should assume she can manage well enough.
Dante
we should assume she can manage well enough.
Does she, though? We haven’t seen enough of her yet.
My AUDHD comes with a really bad memory, but like Doopyboop, I’m wondering if this isn’t more of a dissociative thing. As for Booster, it could also be they’re just using college to be more independent instead of, indeed, being all over her all the time.
Jeremiah
I said we can assume because she should ha been here around the same time as the rest of the cast, maybe later we find out she actually struggles a lot in classes, we shall see, but so far she seems to be doing okay. And yes dissociative disorders are disabilities, that is what I was referring to.
Vanessa
We have seen her in class so at least she managed to get to some. She can’t possibly be as lost in a fog all the time as she seems here or she’d have flunked out by now. Presumably. I can’t imagine she’s wandering all around the campus and only eating or sleeping when Booster finds her to bring her something and drag her to her dorm room.”
Dante
I’m sorry! Hadn’t parsed the tone right lsjgslkdf ^^;;; but that’s fully on me.
Jeremiah
It’s cool.
Proxiehunter
Right now the idea of her having some sort of dissociative disorder seems based on the idea that she “forgot where she was”. Without further information it seems more likely to me that she tried to get from point A to point B, took a wrong turn at Albuquerque, and wound up at point C instead and didn’t realize that until someone told her. You don’t need a dissociative disorder to get lost. Especially if you have a poor attention span at start thinking about seahorses instead of paying attention to where you’re going.
+1, it kinda feels like dissociation. She doesn’t look terribly depressed or anything, but idk – I have several periods of my life I don’t remember because they were so bad my brain unplugged. It happens.
That, or anterograde amnesia.
It has to be more than ADHD, but since we don’t know enough, I’m more like deeply curious, I guess?
Vanessa
I barely remember my college years lol.
Dante
Right there with you. [Offers hugs]
It took me a couple of years after dropping out to start memory’ng better.
Clif
Speaking from experience, it can also be hyperfocus. Your focusing on something and your body is on autopilot and then you look around with no idea where you are or how you got there.
Dante
Speaking from experience too, that’s a way nicer option :’33 It’s possible! Every single time we’ve seen her so distracted, she’s been reading. Those rabbit holes and deep dives can truly be something. So in that case…
… I wonder what’s she learning about this time?
Michael Steamweed
This is how I interpreted it. I’ve got a serious case of that myself. Was at its worst in my 20s and 30s. Less bothersome in my middle aged years.
Throwatron
Yeah, every time I can recall Charlie has had the opportunity to explain being somewhere she didn’t intend to be, or accidentally ignoring someone within five feet of her, she’s said she was thinking really hard about a specific thing. Girl just thinks about stuff.
I have a variant of ADHD that makes me into the ultimate space cadet when unmedicated. We exist. Charlie is the first time I’ve ever seen someone like me (and my grandmother) in fiction. Maybe we’ve got ADHD and something else, I don’t know, but to everyone who’s like “this can’t just be ADHD”…as far as I know at this point, yes, it can.
I wonder if medication would help b/c doesn’t work for everyone but given she’s not come across anything dangerous and booster’s not fussing over her to where they feel like they can’t take their eyes off of her for more than ten minutes, i imagine she’s functioning well otherwise, i’d just be more worried about her showing 15 mins late to class each time unless it’s just automatic for her walking to class or so even if she’s a bit delayed or so
(maybe she’s looking at a ‘to do list’ on her phone or so)
I’m admittedly a fan of medication. After it took, uhm, some time to find the right one and all but yeaaah. It can save your life.
At this point it’s all conjecture, granted! Charlie is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. But as I commented upstairs, there’s a possibility Booster has had more of a caretaking role in the past and now they’re separate at college… They’re finally getting some time to themselves? I’ve seen it happen with siblings of different ND flavors.
anon
i think it wouldn’t go that way but imagine if she was completely “normal” and acted like this on purpose to troll ppl
