Having been in this situation (on the Ethan side) I 100% disagree college students are adults and have a right to privacy. I mean Jacob gets a pass because he’s also a student, but when university’s do this it’s horrible and unethical.

Jacob has probably literally never considered what it’s like to not be able to trust your family to treat you well. He’s a very blessed guy. Lots of people who grow up with proper families really struggle to understand, that their instinct to go to their families for help when things are bad, can be inconceivably harmful to other people who are from typical families.

Naomi strikes me as the kind of mom who has a specific idea in mind for what your son’s life will be and disruption of that is never accepted. She imagined Ethan would have a beautiful Jewish bride and the fact that Amber is short and round and then he found out he was gay after has been something she utterly refuses to get over.
She blames Amber for not fixing Ethan, the way she fixed her husband. So, she will undercut and insult Amber to Ethan as much as possible, because she’s desperate to convince him to shut her out of his life, in favor of a woman who she can approve of. The same way she’s been directly aggressive to Amber, every time we’ve seen them together.
She actually just treats everybody this judgementally, because that’s the way she thinks about other people. They’re either doing things right (right = doing whatever she specifically wants them to do), or they’re deliberately spiting her, through their willful defiance of what is obviously the correct action.
