It depends. If she is going to run the social media platform for her campaign, that’s likely a paying gig funded by the campaign itself. It’s the congressional staffers who might not get paid, which still doesn’t make sense since those funds would come from their congressional budget paid by the taxpayer, so refusing to pay is an ideological choice rather than a practical one. It also ensures that most staffers be from rich families as those are the only people who can afford to live in DC without a real salary.
Terry
Actually, there is a practical reason as well. In theory, if they aren’t getting paid, the only people who will do the job are the ones who want you to get elected (for whatever reason). If pay comes with it, people will take the job who just view it as a job and will may just go through the motions. Of course, that won’t guarantee they will be competent, but nothing is perfect.
butts
that argument doesn’t really hold up to scrutiny when congresspeople get six-figure salaries and a generous pension
krveale
Agreed. Also doesn’t hold to scrutiny compared to how things work… in most of the rest of the world?
Daibhid C
Reminded of a thing someone said when BuzzFeed was using a similar argument to say an unpaid journo was a dedicated and impartial journo: If you’re not paying them, who is?
Needfuldoer
Not to mention all the sweet, sweet bribe lobbying money they’ll get while in office.
Deanatay
This is why no one should ever be in a position to decide how much they get paid to do their job.
That’s really flawed logic. If there’s no pay, then nobody CAN take the job if they’re not already wealthy
I’d much rather have politicians who treat it like a job than rich assholes who’ve never worked a day in their lives
thejeff
It’s also just wrong. Staffers get paid, though often not much – at least for the lower level peons.
Campaign staff also gets paid, but a lot of the grunt work is done by volunteers.
Someone's Ed
Correction: only people who are wealthy or corrupt will take the job. If they’re interested in getting all their income through bribes, it’s a great job.
LookingIn
You have it the other way around. Congressional staffers are paid through the feds, it’s one of the perks of the job. Campaign staffers are paid by the campaign and MIGHT NOT actually get paid, especially if they work for cash-strapped candidates.
She could be one or the other, but if she’s smart she’d be a Congressional staffer. That way she’d be able to work from Indiana doing tweets and Facebook posts and Instagram posts, and if she did have to travel to DC she’d have it picked-up as a write-off as part of the job.
Matthew Davis
The tax cut actually eliminated the deduction for work travel, unfortunately.
thejeff
Some misconceptions floating around here: Congressional staffers are paid – Congresscritters get a budget to staff their offices. However junior level staffers are paid relatively poorly, especially for an expensive town like DC. AOC made the decision to bump her staff’s minimum salary to what she considered a living wage for the area. This still came out of her staffing budget, I believe at the expense of the normally better paid top level staff.
Official campaign staff are also normally paid, though a lot of the low level work is done by volunteers – Robin commented at the start of the rally arc about the bros being unpaid interns.
Either way, low paid by Congressional staff standards is still almost certainly more than Becky’s making at Galasso’s unless she’s really cleaning up on the tips.
Have you ever used tamarind paste? It has a very similar combination of sweet and acidic to maple and lime. In fact, I have often seen people recommend lime juice and molasses to replace tamarind in recipes if you can’t find it locally.
Inahc
Mmmm, tamarind. 🙂 My MIL has jars of tamarind concentrate, I was using it like Marmite last time I petsat. I totally forgot to find out where to buy it!
Average Congressional staffer makes $40,000 a year…
Campaign staffers make next to nothing unless they are the chief of staff or chief of communications or a hired consultant. These are the folks you are thinking of, it sounds like Robin isn’t hiring her for this job.
That reminds me of this one experiment our teacher showed us in high school. You put in salt or sugar into some liquid and stir it until you can no longer dissolve any more into the liquid and then you heat up the liquid so you can dissolve in more salt or sugar so you got a super saturated solution. Then add a grain of salt or sugar once its cooled down and the whole thing just precipitates out of the liquid into a tower. Have Robin do something similar.

I’m also sorry for the double post of paranoia with the same link. I just assumed I got the HTML tags wrong and somehow posted a blank post. Here’s the link just in case.

Superpowers or no, Robin apparently still has the metabolism of a coked up hummingbird.
Hopefully this is a paying gig. Like, at least on a “Can take girlfriend to Taco Bell” level.

last time i checked, republican congresspeople don’t generally pay like AOC

I can’t imagine it’s amazing money, but it’s probably a good side gig to help put some money in the bank.
thejeff
More likely waitressing at Galasso’s would be the side gig.

damnit, now I have this perverse urge to make cadbury cereal. … and easter is coming, so creme eggs should be easy to find. >.<
since I can eat sugar again, I've picked up a bad habit of mixing maple syrup and lime juice lately. it is delicious and so so wrong.
The Lurker
Maple syrup and… Lime. This may be what forces me out of the lurk….

I had never heard about maple syrup and lime before but it made me physically shudder.

Cadbury cereal is the same as Smarties cereal.
1) Take out bowl (preferably clean)
2) Put in Smarties/Cadbury eggs
3) Put in milk
4) ???
5) Enjoy?
Deanatay
a) Step 3 is ‘Profit’.
b) Step 4 is ‘Share with friends’, maybe? Or, maybe, you’d rather keep them.
BrokenEye, the True False Prophet
Especially since calling Taco Bell “the best tacos” will likely get her blacklisted from the food service industry (except for Taco Bell)

It depends if she’s labelled a staffer or as a social media consultant. As a social media consultant, though, I can tell you the pay still aint great.
Slartibeast Button, BIA
Can they just make her funded by a dark money PAC or something?
Schpoonman
Robin’s been cut off from the right’s money after her Twitter started calling for humane treatment of US citizens.
Slartibeast Button, BIA
Maybe Leslie can put her in touch with left money?

Some of that fat George Soros cash.
Yotomoe
Probably (slightly) better than minimum wage
Clif
So, Taco Bell then.
Yotomoe
I mean that’s still, objectively, an upgrade.
Needfuldoer
If Taco Bell employees are paid minimum wage and aren’t tipped, then yeah it’s objectively a higher paying job.
Yotomoe
Most fast food restaurants do not give you tips, no.
