      I don’t get it. Is this all just a running joke or do people genuinely think Danny’s going to hook up with Ethan while he’s still dating Amber? Does Danny’s sexuality only matter to people as long as he acts like a bi dude “should”? Does he not count as bisexual if he’s dating a girl?

      Is Billie going to go fuck a dude right now because she’s bi? Is Becky going to make out with Daisy or Marcie because she’s a lesbian? Walky expressed that Joyce was attractive; why isn’t he trying to maneuver her into a threesome?

      I thought just the actively disgusting shit like wanting them to get drunk and fuck or wanting Dorothy to manipulate Danny towards Ethan when he was confused and vulnerable was bad enough, but it’s starting to feel like there’s this hyper pervasive idea that Danny only matters as long as he fucks a guy. That his current relationship is irrelevant and it’s just a stepping stone until he assumes his rightful place as Ethan’s dick holster.

        I agree it’s annoying, but I think people are just not sure where their ship allegiance lies. I’m a big fan of Amber/Amazi-Girl, and I’m enjoying Danny and Amber, but I’m not totally sold on it long term (though admittedly that is partly because I still miss the insanity of SP! Amber/Mike.)
        Ironically, if Amber and Danny break up, I am not sure Ethan is next in line. It might be more dramatic to have him hook up with Sal, thus reigniting the Amber/Sal one-sided blood feud.
        I’m not making a comment about how Danny’s bisexuality affects him in a relationship, but how *college* tends to affect relationships. (I’m bisexual in a committed relationship myself, fwiw.)

          If people just want to ship them that’s great. They’re cute together! They’d have adorable adopted babies! They could cuddle and argue about Robo-Vac!

          What I fucking despise is how Danny hooking up with Ethan is treated as an inevitability. That it has to happen because Danny’s bi and Ethan’s gay, and as the only two LGBT dudes in the entire cast, they have to get together, and Danny’s current relationship has to end so he can kiss boys.

          I mean, it should end. For a lot of reasons. Dude slipshines should not be one of them.

          It feels to me more that people think they should get together because they appear to have great chemistry and a lot in common. If they were both free and single, why wouldn’t two people for whom sparks fly, who get along really well and have a lot in common, get together?

          It’s almost certainly not going to happen because of Amber, yes. I think it would devastate her if Danny left her and hooked up with her best friend. But we’ve seen more signs of Danny and Ethan having electric chemistry than Danny and Amber/AG- that almost feels like he just felt like he shouldn’t be single and hey, maybe she’s interested and superheroes are awesome anyway.

          Just my take.

        I find it irritating, because it reinforces two humiliating stereotypes of bisexuals: (a) that we’re all gay or lesbian and just don’t admit it yet, and (b) that we’re incapable of fidelity because we need to chase everything that moves. Those just aren’t true, and it’s biphobic to repeat them.

        I know, I’m pissing into the wind, but…hey, you’re being kind of bigoted when you repeat those old canards. Please, stop.

          Pushing for a ship is a no-win scenario for bi people (“You’re really gay” and “You’re really straight” nearly always will come up in a monogamous relationship). You could make it Poly, but that comes with its own problems, so far as society is concerned (It’s great if you can manage it, of course, but society is asinine in a lot of respects.)

          This isn’t to say ‘it’s totally fine’. There’s a lot of no-, or minimal, win scenarios, such as pushing for our own sexuality as women.

        The reason that many ship Ethan and Danny isn’t because they are the only Gay/Bi male characters, it’s because in several strips (too lazy to find them) it has been shown they have some attraction. Ethan is the first guy that Danny found himself attracted to. No one is saying that Danny will cheat on Amber, or that Danny and Ethan will for sure have sex, but if/when Amber and Danny break-up, it is a distinct possibility.

          Sure, I get that. When Danny and Amber break up, Ethan feels like the next logical step (and Willis has made it abundantly clear on tumblr that they’re going to happen and that’s a whole new can of worms) and I can dig it.

          What I can’t stand is the dismissal of his current relationship because of his sexuality. That being bi and attracted to a man gives him a new set of rules compared to everyone else that he has to play with, specifically because of his sexuality.

          It’s this ugly viewpoint that makes Danny’s exploration and understanding of his sexuality secondary to filling a notch as the Bi Dude Who Kisses Ethan in an incredibly diverse and LGBT friendly series as Dumbing of Age.

        Some of it is for gawking by people unaffected, but I wouldn’t presume there were (and are) no gay or bi dudes egging those two on either, pulling for the ship they feel either makes more sense, or represents them better.

          Yeah, of course. Just because I’m bi doesn’t mean I’m the ultimate authority on proper representation.

          That does lead into another issue, though. How Danny works for his romance with either/and Ethan and Amber, everything’s kind of put under the microscope because he’s the only other LGBT dude in the cast. There’s significantly more weight to how he’s treated and how he acts.

      I’d say… No. There are a few things that need to happen first:

      1) Joyce needs to go to see Dorothy to talk to her about Ethan… and Becky… and ToeDad… and her attitude towards homosexuality… and the fact that she doesn’t want to lose her as a friend;

      I’ve got the feeling poor Walky is going to be left standing outside the room whilst Joyce pours out her heart, likely in tears. He’ll likely muse that he doesn’t understand “chick stuff”; Willis may do this in just one strip, taking the conversation as read;

      2) Joyce needs to confront what she needs to do to protect Becky;

      3) Joyce may ask (a weirded out) Sal to teach her how to be a rebel and disobey adult authority figures.

      I suspect that Dorothy might be somewhat more useful a confidant on the Becky issue; she’d likely do something more positive than hide her under a mattress like a naughty magazine or some other item of contraband!

Fall in love, smooch on the mouth, everything will be sorted out. It helps that Dina and Becky are new to this and behaves like adorable high-school sweethearts.

    I still think a part of Joyce feels guilty for not being the one to smooch Becky, fall in love with her and make everything better, but she can’t begrudge Becky now when she found another doofus to be sickeningly sweet with.

    Holy shit is this huge. Joyce is genuinely happy for Becky and Dina. Not, I want to be happy for her, but this is a sin. Not, oh no, is this too out? Not, oh dear is this a good trajectory for her with an atheist and are you sure it isn’t a sin when you are all smoochy face and…

    But genuinely, grinning ear to ear happy for her. She has traversed her long dark teatime of the soul this weekend and has now reached the point where she can take joy in her best friend’s love, happiness, and identity without reservation or hesitation. She fully supports her now, both consciously and unconsciously.

    And one can’t over state how huge that is. I mean, less than a week ago, this was a mortal sin, something her church ranted about. And she has weathered her own self-doubt and questions and has found peace in genuine loving support. She has pulled a Huck Finn here, fully going in on being damned if this is what that means, because she can’t doubt that this is right for Becky anymore.

    And that… that is so beautiful to see that I’m actually tearing up a bit.

    In plot terms, I’m sticking with my theory (stated yesterday) that Ross may take a day or so to find his way back to the college. I also think that he’ll be so distracted by the car situation (and, maybe, raising funds enough to pay a fine/release fee) that it might take him a while to regain focus on Becky.

      I really like Joyce’s smile too. Re the hovertext, I read it both as happy that Becky is happy, but also happy to confirm to herself that she’s now OK with girl-smooches (with other girls smooching, that is – not girls smooching HER).

      It also confirms what I suspected before – that her discomfort with Dina+Becky was more due to Dina being an ‘evilutionist’ who’d lead Becky astray than the genders involved.

    In the past, Dina’s worn dark blue, muted purple, and a lot of clothes that aren’t all that bright (excluding any dinosaur attire).

    And now that she’s with someone, I notice the first thing we see her wearing is a bright red shirt.

      That was my first thought as well. Dina is putting on a display to attract a mate. Well, one particular mate anyway.
