          I agree with most of your post, except for “EVEN to her own brother”. That makes it sound like one would expect them to be close, but everything about their relationship and history makes me feel like her being distant from him is the only outcome- at this point in their lives at least. In fact I feel like he’s a big part of why she developed into an emotionally unavailable person.
          I think that, in a few years, they would re-establish their relationship and it would be a strong and healthy one. I know we won’t see that but that’s what I choose to believe.

        That’s not even all that odd. There are quite a number of Moonlight Densetsu metal covers and metal covers of the not so hot US dub version.

        Pretty much since kids that grew up watching cartoons have been becoming professional musicians as adults there have been recorded covers of cartoon themes (cf. The Ramones covering Spiderman and anything one cares to name from Saturday Mornings Greatest Hits) and since the internet and especially YouTube became things, it’s been a growth industry among amateurs as well.

          It’s not really condemning individual people who just happen to have that trait; it’s a shorthand for frustration with a System, such as classism, or the recession. People who express frustration with “straights” (or cis people) are talking about the way that Straightness as a class materially hurts them, and occasionally the cluelessness and hurt feelings they encounter from individual straight (or cis) people when they cry out from that pain.

          Like I understand what you’re going for here, but no. What you’re describing, the vanilla sexual habits associated with certain cis heterosexual people, is not what’s being complained about, even as a joke, which butting’s reply surely was.

          (See also complaints about: the police, white people, liberals (when not uttered by a FOX Nees talking head), neurotypical people, so on and so forth. They’re not personal attacks, they’re expressions of frustration and pain with shitty situations, and we seem much better able to recognize this about some examples than others.)

          this does technically overlook queer folks who have biokids, but yeah, you can easily make a case that the majority of kids are born to straight people. so that’s what the joke was saying.

Literally every generation we have where it’s more acceptable to be queer turns out to suddenly have more queer kids in it — or, you know, alternately, people feeling like they’re allowed to both question their identity and publicly tell other people they aren’t straight… tend to be more likely to do both of those things.

      Death metals are the highly radioactive ones that aren’t normally found in appreciable amounts in nature. So, technetium, promethium, and anything with an atomic number higher than 94. Normal metals are things like, y’know, iron, copper, that kind of stuff.

        Atreyu is usually classified as Metalcore and usually lean more into the Punk and hardcore Alt-Rock influences of that genre than the Metal ones, though they aren’t as musically stripped down as most of either due to the Metal influences.

      There is no “regular” Metal. “Metal” in modern parlance is simply a generic metagenre while “Death Metal” is a specific genre within that metagenre usually typified by very dirty down tuned electric guitars and bass, fast tempo drums and deep gravely scream singing. Death Metal largely grew out of the Punk/Metal synthesis that was Thrash Metal in the ’80s and as such holds a lot of the same anger at the ills of society and exploration of the innate darkness of the human psyche in both tone and lyrical content.

      I could go on, but I love me both some metal and some media taxonomy and would inevitably spend hours doing that rather than just answering the question ;D

          Yes, but Dethklok is a special thing because while they are a band, they are at the same time a parody of the genre.

          Seriously… Saints Row the Third has The Cyborg Slayers by Dethklok on the soundtrack. (On the Adult Swim radio station, though I always have a mixtape with it and some of the tracks from The Blood, the metal/hard rock station.) If I had to pick out which track on the soundtrack was a parody of metal…it would not have been it.

          It would have been Arma-Goddamn-MFin-Geddon*, by Marilyn Manson.

          Yeah, Cyborg Slayers is relatively normal (and awesome). Hatredcopter, on the other hand, is much more obviously a parody with lines like:

          Musically they’re fairly typical Black Metal, which is typically more stripped down and less downtuned but more melodic than Death Metal while lyrically more akin to Gothic Metal. As characters they’re extremely brutal as is appropriate for a sendup of the image of the Metal genres in general.

    I’very always been able to relate to Sal when it came to the challenge of being social, when I was Younger I was a bit uneasy about making first impressions.

      Holy shit, I’ve finally become older than most of the strips characters (anyone 18 and younger) I didn’t even think about that until now!

        There’s one webseries that I read– Not this one, though it’s totally possible for it to have happened for someone with this one– where the characters are in college, and I started reading it in high school. Not like senior year, either, but like sophomore year of high school. And then I went to college, graduated, and did an internship. And the characters are…still in college. It’s a weird feeling.

        (Especially going from thoughts like, “Is this what x is gonna be like?” to, “Huh, that was not at all what my experience of x was like.”)

    We could be at something of a paradigm shift moment for lots of characters if many rooms are re-arranged to get around Billie being moved out because Chloe seemed to enjoy having Clint’s smile of approval directed at her. Sal may not be the only one to get a new roomie. It’s entertaining to speculate on new combinations that might emerge.

      I get the feeling that Chloe and the school aren’t going to put in that much work to deal with this. More likely they’re bringing in someone who was waitlisted. IU has over 48K students so it’s extremely likely that not everyone who wants to live on campus gets into the dorms.

      The only other change that *might* happen is Roz moving in with Sal since she’s previously indicated that she wanted to change rooms. They might put the new person in with Mary instead. But I don’t think they’re going to move a bunch of people around just because one left.

    I’m sorry about disappearing. I haven’t been well. Bad enough to fall behind on my comics even. Unfortunately, now I’m in the hospital. I fell. Snapped my radius and ulna. Compound fracture. So much blood. I’m on morphine and sometimes I still scream. My voice is hoarse from it. Going in for surgery in a few hours. It will take 3 hours. Maybe more. And I might need physical therapy, but won’t know until surgery is over. I’m scared, but anything is better than this pain.

      Thank you all. I appreciate every reply and wish I could hug you all. Wish I could respond to everyone, but I’ll be back out soon so I’m updating everyone before I doze off. Woke up in pain so had to press my morphine button. Glad i decided I might as well see the new comic.

      The surgery went well and my forearm no longer buckles when I try to move it. I’m on enough meds to kill a mule. 2 antibiotics to keep the bones from getting infected, fluid, morphine delivered when I press a button, lots of various shots in my IV for various stuff, and one bag I’m not sure what’s for. Plus all the shots (like for tetanus) and some pills (like benadryl because morphine makes you itchy). I’m also now on oxygen because my blood ox kept falling into the 80s percent wise.

      The surgery went well considering. Pre op was gonna take and hour to and hour and a half and the surgery itself would take about an hour and a half with an hour to come out of anesthesia. It was most likely to only take a small incision or two. Neither of those things were correct. I was much worse than they thought, surgery took 2 hours 45 minutes, and they had to split my arm open on both sides. It’s painful I won’t lie, but less so then having the bones loose inside my arm. I’m also running a bit of a fever tonight. I’d say more but I’m being pulled back into sleep. I’ll be okay. And thanks again. You guys are great.

      I kind of missed it on the first read, but those first couple panels are nicely subtle. Sal’s just talking about not having contact with one of her friends, but you can see Danny wondering if she’s hinting at Amber being away, if she knows. He even starts to say something, probably to cover for her, but Sal just keeps plowing on about personal problems.
