No way, an N64 controller is still more comfortable than using a single joy con with both hands
Needfuldoer
Joy-Cons are tiny, but the N64 controller is just baffling.
Mr. Random
I never understood how it was.
It has two modes.
Right hand on the lower right to hit A/B and reaching up to hit the 4 directional C buttons. Using the index/middle to hit the R.
Then the left hand position is determinded by the game.
Standard position is in the center, thumb on the joystick and the hand supporting it. Index finger lightly resting on the z button.
Classic position is on the far left, holding it like an nes controller. Thumb on the directional pad and index/middle resting on the L button.
Sincerely, never understood how so many people were confused.
Needfuldoer
I had a Playstation; the DualShock was peak controller design for its day. Why make you switch hand positions depending on whether you needed the D-pad or the one stick?
Mr. Random
Oh absolutely the PS controller was a better and more streamlined design. But the N64 wasn’t really confusing to me, so I just questioned why so many others question that.
Jamie
Oh, that’s because people believe there only exist “best” and “worst” things, so if it isn’t the best, then it must be the worst.
It’s basically toxic billionaire techbro thinking as expressed by random people on the internet.
AY
I’ve always been fond of GameCube controllers, vibed with me
Needfuldoer
I meant “baffling” more in the “who thought this was a good idea” sense. All they had to do was pop an analog stick or two and two extra shoulder buttons on the SNES controller.
…Like Sony did.
TCS
In hindsight it was a questionable design, but it wasn’t confusing to me as a kid. I remember being confused by Cranky Kong’s minirant in DK64 about needing another hand to use it lol
I think the entire concept of cheating has nothing to do with what you’re actually doing. For example, for a swingers couple, having sex with other people wouldn’t be cheating. For a couple of GoT lovers, watching the finale with someone else might very well be.It’s very context dependent: as I understand it, it’s about knowingly doing something for your own benefit that you know is going to hurt your partner. So in this case? No clue, depends on Lucy.
Jamie
Yup. The word “cheating” doesn’t really mean anything. The word people actually want is “betrayal”.
Kimi
Even “betrayal” seems a bit harsh for a TV show episode imo. “Break trust” or “let down” seems to fit better. You had expectations and they were broken when the person did something. Having a preset agreement or sometimes a regular pattern of always doing it (though that less so) makes a difference in how bad of a “betrayal” it is. If you never asked them to always do something with you, but expect them to do so because they always have, it can be rough if they do it without you (even if they thought that they could because you never asked). I also look at it from a friend and family member perspective too rather than just significant other. If a friend always invited you to a sport’s game with them, or a family member always invited you over for Thanksgiving and suddenly they don’t, it can be really painful. It’s even worse if they invite someone else instead of you and don’t tell you about it until right before or after the fact. That fits the term “betrayal” more than “cheating”, like Jamie said. All in all, the majority of it seems to be caused by a lack of proper communication and sharing of expectations.
Quirdry Tawks
Personally? I say any term stronger than “disappointment” is bullshit. At least, as applies to this situation.
To Lucy, it’s hard to say. It just might be nothin’.
I think this is most accurately seen as “being friends.” A relationship where ordinary friendship is seen as emotional cheating is probably not fully healthy.
Freemage
The issue here isn’t what they’re doing, it’s that Walky feels he can’t talk to Lucy about the situation that’s causing him to pick Amber’s in the first place. It’s not ’emotional cheating’, but it’s also not ‘healthy relationship’.
Skater Girl
Walky and Lucy have been dating a few weeks. They’ve barely been together long enough to even call it a relationship.
Meeting my partner and realizing the me when I’m alone and the me when I’m with them are the same me was when it was solidified for me that they were the one.
That was a confusing ass sentence but you know what I mean.
You can be your true self around them. If you introvert, you can actually spend time with them without them draining your batteries (and there’s a good chance this is related). Because much as you love other people, constantly filtering oneself to try to live up to (oftentimes unspoken) societal expectations can be exhausting…
Schpoonman
I had a roommate and then manager (two different people) who did not understand what the word”introvert” meant. It was hell trying to explain that they didn’t give me 1% of the space I needed and they kept playing dumb to force me to talk to them more.
Yup. Systematic ableism at work, it’s not your obligation to educate them if they deliberately wanna fuck with you like that, that’s human resources job.
Not to mention it’s a landlord’s duty to protect vulnerable residents.
In that strip, Walky felt comfortable in his relationship (even though it only had three days left) and Amber was freshly dealing with proving her father right and Amazi-Girl running off without her consent. So now Amber has less to worry about and Walky has more
Wow.. Sometimes I forget the timescale in the comic. When I was that age I really had a much better acquainted with the weight and sequence of events and milestones in my life.
Then again, mine passed by at a scale of 1 yr=1 yr, not 1yr=1 wk.
It does make sense. Like he obviously likes Lucy, like being around her, cares about her, wants to have sex with her, etc, but he also spends so much time in her orbit and Lucy’s always got something she’s moving towards. Not a bad thing, but it does mean that yeah, he doesn’t get to do “nothing” around her, really.
Besides, honestly, I think it’s healthy for people in relationships to have their own time and their own retreats sometimes. You can’t always be in each other’s sphere or else you get friction.
Dorothy was the same way too but most of her pressure is self-inflicted. She never really took it out on Walky, whereas a lot of Lucy’s energy tends to affect the people around her.
Put me down as another who doubts/doubted that he really wants to have sex with her, but decided not to say anything when this was first posted. “Doesn’t want to disappoint her or be a Bad Boyfriend” is a better read, IMO. And also IMO, if this goes on, there’s a fair chance he’ll eventually end up either pressured into having sex* or having another of those moments where he finds a spine and sets a boundary.
(* what I find interesting is that usually, in fiction and maybe in RL, this is what happens to the girl – pushed into “giving it up” for/by the aggressive boyfriend.)
StClair
(hm, this was meant to be a reply to DailyBrad, not Nono. ah well.)
Not sure I’d agree. Dorothy did inflict some of herself onto Walky. I think the difference is that she didn’t have the same need of Walky that Lucy does. There’s a desperate edge to Lucy, because Walky is an achievement to Lucy, whereas for Dorothy, Walky was a guilty pleasure and someone she could be weak for.
You’ll notice, in addition, that Dorothy and Walky broke up basically right after Dorothy realized that Walky Needed Her Help and he became a Project.
Nono
That’s unfair to Walky – Dorothy didn’t break up with Walky because he suddenly needed care and attention. They broke up because all her burdens had come bearing down on her. It’s not like she broke up with Joyce when she needed more help.
Thirded. I get a strong sense that Walky is with Lucy not because he likes her romantically or sexually but because- I guess because he wants to like her romantically and sexually. And he’s not emotionally mature and aware enough to know that someone can tick all the right boxes and still not have the spark.
(Not a dig, that’s not a thing usually learned at his age, even by those with much more dating experience.)
I’m pretty sure there was a strip where they were in Lucy’s dorm room, with both ready and in the mood, but were blocked by Jennifer, who refused to leave, and both of them were upset about that. That’s certainly not evidence of a great love, but they’re college freshmen and have only been together a few weeks (if I calculate correctly) so expecting a great love at this point seems a little overboard. However, it did seem evidence (to me, anyway) that Walky was interested in sex with Lucy.
GholaHalleck
Nonsense, the truth is that Walky didn’t want to immediately take her to pound town is *proof* that he shrivels like a week old banana at the thought of intercourse with her.
It couldn’t *POSSIBLY* be because the last two relationships he had crashed and burned after he had jumped dick-first into them.
Or that he maybe had some issues after his roommate died and his coping mechanism broke the bulk of his relationships.
thejeff
Yeah, I do think we’re reading way too much into this and that there are many possible reasons other than “it’s a doomed relationship”. He was also thrown by Lucy’s declaration of love, in response to misreading his casual comment.
I also think there’s something very gendered about the general take on this. If it was a girl in a new relationship wanting not wanting to jump straight into sex, few would see that as the relationship being doomed. Since Walky’s a boy, if he doesn’t want to go straight to pound town, he’s obviously completely uninterested.
OTOH, there’s definitely something going on. He’s showing a lot signs of interest than he did early on with either Dorothy or Amber, so it doesn’t seem like he really wants to, but is deliberately holding back.
HueSatLight
not wanting to have sex with her doesn’t mean he’s not attracted to her. It includes the reasons you listed. And he won’t tell her, that’s why the relationship is in trouble.
Freemage
Ding-ding! We have a winner! The issue isn’t the facts, it’s the context. “Doesn’t want to have sex right away” is not a problem. “Can’t talk to my girlfriend and bring our relationship expectations to the same page” is a HUGE problem.

The strip was set the morning after, with Walky recounting it and showing gratitude to Jennifer, stating he had eaten something the night before that made him gassy
The night before, they had harassed Danny at roller derby about them being there was a double date because Lucy was hunting for a third date so she still could be a good Christian girl while having sex. They then went and ate at taco Bell or something at Danny’s suggestion that it would make a third date automatically.
HueSatLight
feels like he had “oops, ate too much” as a backup in case Jennifer wasn’t there.
Steve C
IIRC, Walky actually thanked Jennifer for blocking them since he had felt a little gassy from too many chocolate chip pancakes.
He’s shown desire for her before, he does want to sleep with her. He’s just always going to be a bit of a slacker and he’s starting to feel the pressure of pushing himself and not like it as much.
Since we never got a resolution to the whole “undiagnosed ADHD” thing I wonder where this is going.

Amber can be found in the following environments:
* Garbage Roof
* Nothing Dorm
* Trauma Convenience Store
* Therapeutic Roller Derby Rink
* The Fanfic Zone of Forbidden Delights and Nightmarish Horrors (they are the same thing – she’s basically a Smut Cenobite)
* Class (on occasion)

cute but i wonder if this would be seen as ’emotional’ cheating

It’s nothing.

Not by anyone I’d ever want as a partner.

Emotional cheating is when you have any positive emotion whatsoever that’s not the property of your significant other.

Sounds good, let’s talk about that the same way we talk about real cheating. Nothing can go wrong.
