    Don’t think Joyce recognizes their sameness. I don’t think she is hot for either one of them. I think she is just flat out jealous that Becky dares to like someone she herself can’t stand.

    I knew a person much like Joyce, she was not homeschooled or overly religious. But same type of personality.

    The I’m cute and know it and if you are my friend you believe everything I do and you don’t like anybody better than me and you can’t be friendlier with my friends than I am.
    In short, jealous and possessive to the exstream.

    And very good at saying things that were double edged and then being oh so innocent; or discussing one friends bad habits in front of another (see Billy meeting Becky).

    All of which Joyce does to perfection.

    Yeah she is screwed up because of her parents and the near rape and her pardon the expression God Awful religion…so are a lot of other people 🙂 And we don’t act like Joyce.

    Gotta hate Mary for being such a Mary. But, Joyce is so much more complex and unlikable on so many levels.

    Love Becky. She and Walky are wonderful.

I mean when you look back at Ruths interactions with Mary its basically Ruth dragging her around by the scruff of the neck, threatened so Billie could get on the elevator then slapped and with a dick print so Marys dislike of Ruth is fair enough I’d have thought

    I’m loving this, but man, I can’t shake a dark feeling about the whole thing. I mean, Becky went off the grid, then showed up across the state unannounced? As Sarah pointed out, that makes no sense. Plus, she had the same psychotic upbringing as Joyce but is… normal. (And yet, according to her pastor, Joyce is better socialized than her? Huh?)

    Something’s just plain wrong here, and I don’t know what it is.

    My current running theory is that Becky is rejecting the life her parents want her to accept — either she’s athiest or LGBI or just not a doormat. Something.

      I can field this question as a fellow homeschooled fundie. The pastor said she was better socialized–That just means Becky was quieter at church, pastors seldom ever know what the youth in the church are doing even at church let alone on their own.

      If internet fandom has taught me anything, it’s that “buddies” don’t exist. Everyone’s either doing it, has done it, or wants to. (That goes double for anyone portrayed by a hot actor, in which case, the actors are also doing it.)

        To be fair, that is not really correlated with if they are buddies or not. They can still be buddies, only buddies that have sex. Or they can be enemies that have sex. Or they can never interact in canon but still have sex. Or they can be popular character from different fandoms and have sex. Sex is a given between ALL characters (sometimes with the exception of canon couples because… that’s no sport?), it doesn’t necessarily exclude other forms of interaction.

    FINALLY the penny dropped. When Becky asked Joyce to “never change” in the beginning she talked about holding on to her optimism and positive view of people, not her belief system. That’s why we got that adorable “Same old Joyce” the other day.

    Joyce has not changed – she still has all those positive qualities Becky and we all love.

    Man, I’ve been confused for a while that Becky was so easygoing and worldly, because I half remembered this strip ( http://www.dumbingofage.com/2011/comic/book-1/03-men-are-from-beck-women-are-from-clark/change/ ) from my initial archive dive and misread the meaning of it.

    My confusion has cleared up. Clearly, Becky has always been like this and her alarm in the linked strip was more “Joyce is doing something very unJoycely, IS SHE OKAY?” than “Joyce has fallen from the One True Way!”

    Reading the comments, I kinda think I’m the only one that feels bad for Joyce… I mean, the way she brought Walky into the conversation, told me that she’s mad that Walky took away her best college friend.
    Now she’s probably feeling that he’s taking her childhood friend, too.
    IDK, that’s just how I see it, considering how she acted in previous pages about having to share her friendship with others. Like when she was uncomfortable relinquishing Dorothy to hang out with Walky and said something along the lines of, “I guess it makes sense that he gets more time with you now”. IDK. Maybe I just empathize with Joyce more, or whatever. :/
