          Also, the original book by Michael Chrichton is actually a very good read – managed to get through it while I was in elementary school (before the movie was out)

          Wow, I don’t remember it looking that bad… but that was 20 years ago. I thought I saw it in theaters, but I have to think my parents would have enough sense not to take a 5 year old to a PG-13 movie. I remember it being somewhat scarey though.

        I suppose given the nature of the Animorphs, one of them could get mauled by a raptor at some point. But they never gave last names (and likely the first names are fake too).

      This ties into the whole “undiagnosed autistic” head-canon I have for Dina (shut up I wasn’t diagnosed until my second year of college either and I’m not subtle,) but in that case… have fun figuring out which one it is. Because on the rare occasion that she actually picks up on what’s going on in real time, that WOULD be a mocking method. And NO ONE could tell the difference. EVER. Muahahahahaha evil laugh.

          I wasn’t meaning to criticize. I was imagining that circumstances beyond her control kept her sheltered or too shy to talk to anyone and learn these things on her own. I have a similar past, myself. I’m okay at tone of voice and such but I was VERY socially inept as a teen and young adult (and now at 31 I’m still learning things I ought to have learned by 20). So I get it, I do. I was just saying it might not be something she was born with, but rather a result of her upbringing.

    I thought Dina would be more hurt by this sarcasm (it could seem rude to someone who is blunt but trying to help), but the fact that she isn’t makes sense. It seems that she doesn’t notice changes in the mood and reacts instinctively, but rather she identifies changes in the mood, not knowing how she feels about them until she’s considered it. (Like with Raidah in the mall. On the spot she seemed unaffected, but after a while, and naming her reasons, she shared her discomfort.)

      On a side-note: I love all of Amber’s expressions here. You can tell that she’s annoyed with herself for telling Dina off, but also that she doesn’t have the energy to deal with talking right now. I predict quiet, annoyed, one-sided tension.

        That’s the theory and might well be the case. I’m trying to figure out how much her socializing difficulties, whatever they are, fit into her mindset. She recognizes that her friend is upset and displaying that to her, but she doesn’t seem affected by that, instead just continuing to analyze the situation. So my question is basically does she have to analyze a situation entirely and mull it over before she’s worked out how to feel about it? The situation with Raidah in the mall seems to support this, but she could also know how she feels but not how she’s supposed to react. She’s interesting and for now a bit of a mystery.

    And here we see the fallout from the visit of Amber’s male genetic progenitor. Amber, who doesn’t want to talk, and Dina, who doesn’t normally talk.

    And having been in Dina’s shoes in the past about a lot of stuff (though not the dinobsession), I’m pretty sure what Dina wanted to say was, “What are you upset about?”

    I enjoyed this comic quite a bit. I have only a minor concern that Dina is becoming a caricature, though. It reminds me of the TV series Bones. The main character started off as a slightly awkward human that seemed 3 dimensional, but over time, the shtick took over and she became too unbelievable.

      It’s a valid concern. I think this is how she’s usually been characterized, though. She tries to identify the atmosphere, the social cues on display, and engages in conversation accordingly.
