          Well, no. When you grab an American citizen off the streets, hold them without due process, and deny that their birth certificate is valid, that’s just called ‘kidnapping”. If you then ship them to a slave camp in a country they have no connection to, it’s not “deportation”, it’s “human trafficking”.

      Staying in a position of authority (behind the desk working for the college) is probably the safest place for Asma to stick around right now. Most emergency personnel ignored me when I worked at my front desk. I mostly dealt with allowing EMTs in and out when stidents drank too much. There was one day when an aunt was trying to find her niece and demanding I tell her what room or the girl’s phone number. I called the head RA and sneakily called the room of the girl who did not want her aunt there. The lady got escorted off property, but a cop came back to talk to the RA and I was there. The lady blew a 0.8 BAC. I was raised by alcoholics and had no idea the lady was drunk.

      Said elsewhere, but in this particular case the campus cops seem pretty likely to treat her as “fellow staff member interested in the dorms being orderly, have you seen persons X Y or Z leave the building through here?” rather than “brown woman? Bad!”

        Yeah, cops often arrest and sometimes even prosecute protestors on the spot. It’s pretty rare to track people down afterwards without something more than “you were at the protest we broke up” to aim for.

However, I’ve been informed that, and this came as a huge shock. My conspiracy theory that Chloe was evil on a horrifying level is…NOT substantiated by the text.

    I know, I was shocked.

    In fact, she may not be evil at all despite being an authority figure.

    In any case, this is a powerful story and wouldn’t work for a character other than Asma. I’m glad Willis has promoted her to main cast.

I’m wondering how realistic Willis decided to make these cops behave compared to actual cops for this story arc. I don’t know what they’re like in other countries, but I don’t trust the cops here in America at all.

        If by ‘remain silent period’ you mean actually not speaking to them in any capacity at all, that’s a losing strategy in pretty much all situations. It makes you a target. Just be polite, give vague answers, and don’t admit to anything.

      In other countries that don’t have a lot of corruption, cops are mostly harmless, but the job does attract authoritarians and extreme right-wingers who are itching to deport people. The job itself also teaches you that crime is everywhere and anyone could be a criminal.

        In my homecountry, cops are harmless, mostly good natured people. They do end up retiring paranoid and looking for crime and criminals everywhere.
        What every American says abotu cops, my countrymen say about military people. That’s where the authoritarians and extreme right wingers end up in.
        Mostly because of the military dictatorship a few decades back, the people who wanted to help and protect ended up becoming cops, and the people who wanted to oppress and stomp down in the military.

    From a legal point of view: Do the police have the right to search (or even enter?) the dorm without a warrant? If not, who’s supposed to demand they present one? Asma, in this situation?

    They could get permission from the school I assume even without a warrant, but someone on the scene would have to know about that, right?

    Obviously, cops don’t always follow the rules, but what is the process supposed to be here?

      Normally, what they’re supposed to do in this situation is walk toward the nearest lake, and then keep walking once they reach the water. It’s called the Anticlea Maneuver.

      I mentioned yesterday, but back when I was in college my school had a similar setup that IU appears to (where the “campus police” are a real police force, but also “campus security”), so you’d get situations where a cop would be wearing his metaphorical “campus security, part of residence life and thus basically the landlord” hat, then he’d “smell smoke so it’s an emergency” and pop a door to find a kid with weed, and immediately switch to his “actual badged police” hat who now has seen a person “doing drugs in public”.

      At which point it becomes a matter of how the local judges take it unless you have the money to appeal it up.

      My assumption and this is a laymen is that the school has complete ownership of the dorm and there’s no assumption of privacy or expectation that they can’t be searched at will.

      Certainly, though, there’s plenty of reason to get a warrant with the assaults on an officer and past history of assaults. If they know Amber is Amazi-Girl’s body, they also have past assault with a deadly weapon.

        But that’s kind of a different question: Even if the school has ownership and can allow searches at will, that’s not the same as the police themselves doing so. They’d need authorization from the school, even if they didn’t need individual warrants, right?
        Or is it that since they’re part of the university, they can do whatever anyway? Somehow I don’t think that would fly if they wanted to search a Dean’s office, even if it does for students.

        They definitely have good reason to get a warrant for Amazi-Girl. This isn’t even abuse of police power. It’s not even a huge show of force – possibly less than I’d expect if they’re coming to arrest the vigilante who was beating up multiple squads in riot gear a couple days ago.

      IANAL but my understanding is that dorm rooms are considered private residences for fourth amendment purposes and they would need a warrant probable cause to conduct a search of any individual dorm room.

    Students rent their rooms. The university is the landlord. Betting the leasing contract gives the university the right to invite cops in or inspect the premises without notice.

    Asmah is rightly worried but probably not the original target. But she was seen in close contact with AG. While the kissing protesters were kinda generic teens, Asmah stands out in a crowd. That would make her a possible associate or co-conspirator of AG’s.

        Regarding your comment, yeah I think the university is doing something hinky where they can ‘consent to a search’ of a bunch of student dorms without letting the students know.

          Seems to me they would have to let some school official on the scene know though. In the apparent absence of anyone else, should Asma be asking for a search warrant?

          The university would probably be able to grant the police entry into the residence hall, but any searches of actual dorm rooms would need a warrant or voluntary consent.

          Sure, but they’ve actually got to grant access right? People shouldn’t just be assuming they’ve been given it because they rolled up and walked in.

          Like, come in with a university official in tow or some kind of paperwork. Or obviously and preferably, a warrant. Which, assuming they’re after Amazi-Girl and have any evidence at all, would be a slam dunk. The only real question is how broad could it be.

        I’m going completely off of memory here because I think in one of my criminal justice courses we discussed something like this; anything that is part of the dorm room is fit to be searched, such as the bed, the desk, the closet, because those are things that belong to the university. However, if the student has a backpack or purse, that would technically be considered the student’s personal belonging that doesn’t belong to the university and might not be able to be searched without a warrant granting access to it.

          I don’t think that would be true for hotel rooms, which was a topic of discussion in one of my criminal law classes, but I admit we did not talk specifically about dorm rooms, so idk. My instinct is that the general rule is that when you are paying to use a room like a place you live in, and not just like, staying in the guest room at your Aunt Sue’s, you have a reasonable expectation of privacy in that room’s storage spaces like closets, desk drawers, etc.

          Like, if I’m renting an apartment, the landlord can’t give the police consent to search as some kind of proxy for my consent (I mean they can, but Fourth Amendment stuff would come into play for sure). Similarly, if I’m just renting a room in somebody’s house, I still don’t think the police can come search the closet of that room without a warrant, even if the landlord/owner gives them permission to search the rest of the house. I think hotel rooms and dorm rooms should work similarly in that regard.

          On the other hand, if I learned one thing in law school it’s that the law is often counterintuitive so…*shrug.emoji*.

      There is no way they will know she is a former student

      Tony has big cop energy, but I don’t think he could possibly be a narc, because I don’t think he actually knows anything he could narc about. He’s only just become peripherally involved with the group, and I don’t think he’s ever even met Amber.
