I've never done terribly well with t-shirts, which is generally why I never, like, have t-shirts to sell.  It's not rocket science.  BUT there are apparently a lot of places on the Interwebs these days where you can just, like, upload an image and then someone will sell that t-shirt and you don't have to keep an inventory and also cry because you have an inventory for forever.  Long story short, I was curious to see if my T-shirt Curse is still a thing, so I uploaded some simple graphics to TeePublic to see how they fare.  Just an experiment to see, like, will people buy something with Carla on it.  These are not high-concept shirts.  (Well okay one of them is sort of high-concept.)  So if "Dumbing of Age character on a t-shirt" intrigues you, then there is good news for you today.  It is especially good news for the next three days, as the introductory price is $6 off the regular price.  So!

          I’ve found a LOT of it depends on how you cook it and what you serve it in. Fried tofu is be best in my opinion, and I normally don’t even like friend food all that much.

          i had some fried tofu on skewers one time with peanut sauce! that was really good.

          most tofurkey products are actually quite good. (the italian style sausage is probably my favourite, although beer flavour is more versatile)

          as for tofu… well, I used to dislike the taste of soy, which kinda gets in the way. and my mum’s one attempt at serving tofu… well, I remember thinking it was like chicken-flavoured jello. >.< it wasn't until I went to china, where they really know how to cook with it, that I started enjoying tofu. (I was also so lacking in some vitamin that I started liking cooked tomatoes – we couldn't safely eat them raw there)

          Tofu is like potatoes: an ingredient, more than a standalone food.
          Salt and pepper tofu = mashed potatoes
          Tofu in curry = potatoes in stew
          Fried tofu with peanut sauce = bacon-stuffed potato skins

          Tofu can be great if it’s cooked with savory flavors.

          Then there’s the whole texture thing. Tofu comes in a wide range of textures. Which one is “best” is surely a matter of personal preference, and if you’ve tried one you really don’t like, you’ll probably “hate tofu” without knowing what you’re missing.

          I really only eat it in hot and sour soup. Now I need hot and sour soup. Dammit.

          Tofu straight is terrible. But nobody eats it like that. It’s just a protein substrate for the flavors you add. It will taste like whatever you cook it in.

          Personally, I think the Tofurkey slices are a lot better if you a. get the hickory smoked kind and b. sauté it with some honey and liquid smoke. It kind of tastes like crunchy bacon or… something, IDK. I’m not a fan of them uncooked, but then again, I hate lunch meat-type stuff in general. |D

      Probably not as that would tie up the comic in court proceedings for literally all of eternity in regards to Amber’s storyline at least. Pretty sure at worst he has more scars than he did before.

        Amber has a pretty good case for self-defense, unless she went seriously over the top after taking Ryan down, and if she actually killed him, the only story about how it happened is Amber and Dorothy’s.

      We’re getting little dabs of facts. Today we learned that Dorothy didn’t inadvertently publically out Amazigirl in the aftermath. Which wasn’t likely, but you never know.

          He’s not privy to the psychological undertones of her statement, and it’s a running gag that nobody recognizes Amber as Amazingirl until after they already know its here (to the point of assuming someone with a completely different complexion and body type is Amazingirl). He does have reasons to believe that.

          Or it could be a subversion of the gag that Ryan actually did recognize her from her newspaper photos, and he’s either dead, comatose, or otherwise unable to communicate.

        The thing is, with Amber in violent mode, who is going to stop her before she’s through. Odds are Ryan isn’t going to be saying anything.

          Even Ryan doesn’t know, he just made an educated guess, and then the last thing he heard before he got mauled was Amber denying she’s Amazigirl. Even if he’s alive and conscious, he might not be sure, nor feel its necessarily import to accuse her of being Amazi-girl compared to how dangerous Amber is without a mask.

      I got lost in the bottomless pit of sizing charts. how can the women’s tank tops max out at smaller bust sizes than the men’s medium!? and why do some of them say “mens” but have womens’ photos under? and I think they’re carefully hiding sideboob problems in some of those photos…

        I am sad that the zipper hoodies put the picture on the back, where it would almost always be covered. it makes sense that the zipper would cause issues, though. I wonder if they have a way to do a smaller front design on one side?

        I am also sad that the tank top with the best odds of fitting me comes in what looks like four shades of grey, but no green. … actually some of these look like different colours in different photos. :/ colour is hard.

        ah well. I ended up ordering two shirts, hopefully at least one fits. 🙂 I’ve had the most awful luck with clothing lately.

    Comic Reactions:

    Panels 1-3: Oh Walky, you’re not going to be able to stonewall this. Luckily for you Dorothy is likely a very patient and capable tutor and will understand when it’s clear the tutoring session didn’t really do much at all.

    But yeah, it’s impressive how deep the fear is within him of being seen in that vulnerable role of needing academic help. There’s a lot of reasons for that, but it’s still very unfortunate and is giving me all sorts of protective teacher feels*.

    *I’ve had a lot of kids come in to my classes with fear of science or math and a lot of bad baggage I had to help undo and build back confidence with. So Walky right now is reminding me of like half of them.

    Panels 4-5: The luster on the fantasy has faded. When AG was just a symbol, she could live vicariously through the dream of a woman finding and holding on to a form of power. But now she’s seen some of what lies underneath and the reality of violence, she’s flinching away.

    Or possibly recognizes that Amber is in jail or something that makes the AG interviews impossible.

    Either way, this is a bit sad, not just because Dorothy has lost a bit of the hero worship, but because this kind of fits in to a lot of mentally ill people’s fears. That if people were to see their damage fully they’d cringe away and avoid them and never be able to see them the same way.

    We don’t know what Amber did to Ryan and how awful it was, but it’s worth noting she was a scared woman literally being threatened with a knife who committed an act of bravery in protecting Dorothy and Joyce and the other women of the dorms.

    Maybe Dorothy can’t look at her the same way or needs a break to process stuff, but it’s still sad that Amber’s “reward” for that act is more people being terrified of her and seeing her as someone to avoid (again, this is all assuming that the reason she can’t see AG is because Amber is in jail).

    It’s something I worry about on my bad days. That showing what’s going on inside will poison and drive off those close to me. So yeah, I have Amber feels.

    Panel 6: Give up Walky, it’s Dorothy. You’re never winning that Edit War.

      I have mixed feels about Amber’s actions towards Ryan – not to mention the fact that we don’t yet fully know what happened. However, Cerberus, I think I maybe can sympathize at least a little with your remark. (I’m really not trying to be presumptive here; apologies if I’m out of line!) There are very, VERY few people in my life who know how angry I can get. How agressive and violent I can get. How mean I can get. Basically, how *dark* I can sometimes be. Exactly two people who fully know that about me are still in my life. (One is my partner.) Everyone else to whom I’ve exposed that aspect of my self has either decided they don’t want anything more to do with me, or has made it very clear that I’d better “control” that part of me around them if I don’t want them to sever all ties with me.

      I don’t know your personal identity, so I don’t know how helpful this book recommendation is going to be, but my sister recently insisted I read “Dietland” by Sarai Walker. She described it as “‘Fight Club’ for women.” It explores the theme of what might happen if women in the U. S. were to rise up and act like Amber in the fact of rampant sexism, misogyny, rape culture, and female body-shaming. It was a tough (and triggering) but satisfying read.

        I’m of the opinion that Dorothy isn’t avoiding Amber at all, she just can’t meet up with Amazi-Girl now, because Amber is still being detained or something.

        Her expressions in panels 4 & 5 reads to me more like “oh right, I still need to lie about this” than her thinking about Amber and just not wanting to talk about it.

        I’ve still got “Dietland” on the brain, since I just finished it about an hour ago, but it makes some really important points about self-worth and women in the U.S. (I am a cisgender woman who lives in the U.S., so this is my frame of reference – I’m not trying to be exclusionary! I’ll also admit the book is not always so great in terms of representation of Queer identity, specifically Trans* identity, and people of colour, which is something I REALLY don’t like about it.)

        To have worth, women need to conform to bodily standards that are unrealistic at best and severely unhealthy at worst. We need to spend money and time on basically unecessary and often painful body treatments and enhancements. (Without spoilers, there is a grueling scene in the book during which the female narrator gets a full body wax – I only wax my eyebrows and THAT HURTS.) As the books says, we need to be f*ckable to have value.

        But even that is a trap. If we’re not f*ckable because we’re too fat, not pretty enough, not dressed well enough, not enough of a “product,” etc. – well, we “deserve” to be abused and dismissed because obviously we aren’t trying hard enough and we aren’t “real women.” Yet if we try “hard enough” to become “f*ckable,” then we’re open to unwanted attention, abuse, and rape – and we’d better pretend we like it, because we’ve supposedly made ourselves into “f*ck dolls,” which is what every man wants, right? The best any woman can become is an unrealistic, surgically generated fantasy for white cisgender dudebros.

        (PLEASE apply sarcasm filter to the entire previous paragraph!)

        Obviously I’m still kind of p!ssed off from reading the book. Nor am I trying to malign all men in the U.S. My partner is a man and he is about as far from the men in “Dietland” as you can get. However, I believe the book hits upon a very important truth about women in the U.S. – we are all constructs in one way or another. We are forced to determine our identities based upon outside factors, most of which are in turn determined by men. And basing your self-worth upon arbitrary standards set by people who aren’t you, and who don’t understand you, is ultimately really self-destructive. I said the book was satisfying; while I’m personally committed to non-violent resistance and activism, it’s vicariously nice to sometimes read about people being *punished* for the atrocities that U.S. society sometimes so blithely accepts.

        (Slightly off-topic rant over!)

      Walky DESPERATELY needs a good teacher, but a supportive, studious girlfriend will help at least parts of the way. And I agree – I have seen those kids too and it’s SO EASY to allow them to cement their self-image of being too stupid for the subject (or – if they are really unlucky – too smart for it)

        I have this weird hunch that Walky can and would learn the material with Dorothy as a tutor. He’s already dropped the yukfest manner around her, and that’s a tough shell for anyone to crack.

        (Of course, she doesn’t have the free time to do this.)

        (And not just because of Slipshine-rated study breaks, which are a benefit all unto their own.)

      in case this isn’t clear…. it’s ok to have those worries too. like, imho it would be awesome if you found a way to let go of them, but they’re not the end of the world either. it’s ok to not be ok. we’ll still be here.

      I honestly don’t know if I want to see Amber anytime soon. It’s just, like, more and more misery and isolation every time she’s on panel and I don’t know if I can handle it anymore.

      Like, it’s been nonstop things going wrong with Amber for two years now and even when she makes progress it just becomes more self loathing and it’s just hard to read and try to stay invested with my own issues on my plate.

      IDK I’m just really hoping that now that Ryan is taken care of we can have Amber finally crash and start to heal.

      I don’t think Amber’s in jail. So far, the only ones acting really off about things are Joyce, who… uh, lets just stamp “massive, difficult, complicated issues” on given… yeah, and those that know who Amazigirl actually is. Everyone else is acting pretty normally.

      If Amazigirl were arrested, it’d probably come out who she was, and at the very least Joe would’ve shot his mouth off to Danny or some shit.

      Unless I’m mistaken, at this point we’ve seen all but three characters that are connected with Amber/Amazigirl: Rapist McFuckstick, duh. Dina, Amber’s roommate and someone that might have been dragooned into keeping an eye on Amber…

      And Sal, who has a complicated past with Amber/Amazigirl, and is also firmly anti-authority and anti-police, and if Amazigirl is wanted by the police, she’d be an obvious character to be tied into things.

      Oh, and yeah, totally agree on Walky. Whatever other issues he might have that get in the way of his studying, the biggest obstacle right now is that he’s terrified of looking like he’s faltering or seeming dumb. People, especially those that have had things comparatively easy in an area, can have real difficulty in just admitting to others that they need help.

      Like, how many times do you think Walky’s parents have talked about him as being goofy, childish, immature, but at least he’s smart? Maybe not those words exactly, but that was likely a huge part of his self identity, and… well, admitting you’re losing that one thing can be a hard thing to do.

      You just know eight-year-old-Dorothy made a time-turner out of paper when she read that book, and wished, very, very hard for it to work.

      I didn’t stop time, it allowed her to go back in time and be in two places at once, taking two courses at the same time. Keep using it, and you could be 30 by the time you get out of college.

      Time turner, you mean? I thought those were all destroyed after the battle in the Ministry of Magic in the fifth book. And even if I’m wrong about that, they kinda caused Hermione to burn out a bit in the third book, so they’d probably do the same for Dorothy.

      Yes, when you gain access to a time machine, you should totally use it to study more, not to, say, go back to before all the bad shit went down and preemptively punch out the bad guys.

        Hate to be pedantic (Just Kidding) but the Time Turner isn’t a Time Machine and can’t change anything. You basically clone yourself and do different things as the clone. Think of it linearly. A second Hermione appears because magic, they both go to different classes and the original Hermione vanishes because magic

          No, it was definitely time travel. They used it to go back and rescue Buckbeak and mess with the dementors and other stuff that had already happened.
          All cleverly set up so that the later them caused the stuff the earlier them had seen and there was no actual change in events.

    So… they have a stupid edit war going on and Dorothy is in the lead, despite her insane schedule, recent trauma and Walky being obsessed with Dexter trivia and little else.

    He is ALSO a buffoon who have a hard time showing that he cares about people, and Dexter trivia is the first arena he and Dorothy connected over.

    I’m calling it. HE is letting HER win to make HER feel better.

    And it’s working! Just look at that smug smile in the last panel. His own mustasch-twirling dang-those-kids-and-their-dog thwarted villain reaction just makes the victory so much sweeter.

    Yesss, I have been waiting for this moment. (The tees, not the wiki war.) I have picked up my two favorite designs (the Carla and the Lawsome ones), though wow, that $10.00 minimum shipping fee. . . . Definitely worth it.

    Wrt the comic and current storyline, no, Walky, no. Hiding and/or putting off revealing the fact that tutoring went disastrously and you have (presumably) been released from wasting the T.A.’s time is not a good idea. Maybe he’ll find the tutoring offered through the student center, by fellow students, to be a better fit? Unfortunately, I think it’s too late to drop the class by this point. Even if he could, the same problem would inevitably show up later down the line in more advanced classes – it’s not the material, it’s finding an effective way to learn, study, and persevere with material that doesn’t naturally come easy to him. The curse of many smart kids is that they don’t have the opportunity (or need) to find their most effective routes of absorbing and understanding material until after high school.

    I’m rooting for you, Walky!

      Back when I was tutoring in the ’70’s I always found “The best tutoring pays for itself.” line effective, even though it doesn’t actually mean anything substantive. Most people having problems with calculus are mainly dealing with confusion and once you can get them used to thinking down a certain track, asking themselves the same questions each time, actually find it easy. There are exceptions and those are tough.

    Wiki edit wars are like Ingress. Day shift does one thing and the night shift undoes it. You can cite six sources and have it erased by someone who doesn’t know jack about the topic. My wiki pet peeve is Marine Corps history 1880-1920. Sooooooo many wrong people on the internet!
