Should…should I be worried that Dina can apparently hear Becky’s heartrate from a distance? Because that’s something I’ve only known vampires to be able to do.
Because we’ve also seen Dina with fangs recently. And acting rather…bitey.
And she says she likes Dinosaurs so much because they are a constant, and she finds human interaction difficult because people change so much.
And she’s noted as being older than she looks. And she’s very stealthy.
And she encourages Joyce to reject religion in favor of science, and gets upset when Sarah shows signs of superstition. You know, there’s a scene in the book Carmilla where…
You know what? I’m gonna abandon this train of thought. And go see if I have any garlic.
I’m pretty sure fangs refers to only one or two pairs of disproportionately large pointy teeth (one upper and maybe one lower), separated from each other by most of the width of the mouth, around where humans keep their canines.
What we see Dina sporting is two entire rows broad, pointed, edged, and jagged teeth, more akin to bicuspids, each about the same size as the others.
These aren’t fangs. They’re shark teeth. Becky’s going to need a bigger boat.
Seriously? Dina’s all-but-stated to be autistic (Willis has said she hasn’t been diagnosed, but if you look at the rates of women – legally-adult women at that, at 19 Dina is one of the oldest people in the main cast – versus men being diagnosed, that’s not too surprising); many, many of her behaviors map out to traits commonly found in autistic individuals (from “big” things like her being quite clearly overstimulated at Joyce’s dorm party, to “little” things like her feeling uncomfortable whenever she’s not wearing her hat); and furthermore, these factors have been recognized by many diagnosed-autistic readers, including Jenny Islander above (I assume, at least, based on their comment) and myself to name just two names.
You made this same comment when Amber having DID was brought up in the comic.
NotThatDrew
I’ll throw myself in here as a third autistic reader (and a mentor to high schoolers/young adults with ASD) that Dina’s behavior definitely feels like that of young woman with high functioning ASD.
Granted, I’m not a licensed professional qualified to diagnose anyone, but after working around 7ish years in various mentoring settings and having studied ASD for some psych classes I’ve taken, I’m fairly comfortable in saying I usually know what I’m talking about when it comes to this stuff
Jenny Islander
“STOP THE FACES!” Yes, that strip put my shoulders around my ears. I have been Dina in that situation. Too. Much. People. Stuff. Too. Much. Input. Too. Much. Everything. Cannot brain, buffer full.
NotThatDrew
Ugh, I had similar issues with lunch during high school (middle school was okay since it was broken down to two grades at a time in the cafeteria (ie 5th and 6th, then 7th and 8th). Anyways, back in high school I’d eat my lunch as quickly as possible then quickly run either to the library or one of the the practice rooms down by where we had band/orchestra classes.
Teachers thought I was just antisocial until I explained how I could hear just about EVERY CONVERSATION within 20ish feet of me and it would
drive my anxiety through the roof.
Jenny Islander
They didn’t make us sit in the lunchroom in high school, so I found a spot in a hallway that had an empty quad on one side and various utility rooms on the other, and wasn’t on the way to anyplace people went to during lunch. Sitting on the floor was a small price to pay for being able to get away from “the faces” for a while.
Jenny Islander
You realize you’re talking to an actual autistic person, yes?
Man, I wish I could get into horror. But it just… squicks me out bad. Even if it’s not gory, I think the anticipation would stress me out too much.
BarerMender
I can’t watch it. Definitely too stressful.
Azhrei Vep
I kinda miss enjoying horror. But since I left my teens, it’s just … well, bored me, honestly. It used to give me so much joy, too…
Anon A Mouse
I’ve always been into horror video games and suspense movies but have a hard time watching “horror” movies because seeing “real” people die always bothered me.

I was just thinking that Willis’s coy alt text might be referring to Just Been Fucked hair.
Great minds and all that, I guess.
Wagstaff
I was thinking the same thing when I saw the bed in “Birthday Pursuit” making the “hompk” sound and seeing the couple sleep there.
Opus the Poet
Becky is turned on by Dina’s hair.

Definitely feels like something that’s being worked towards.

For some reason I thought this had to do with the band, so I’m glad I clicked the link.

Becky’s scaroused!

When faced with fear, you have a number of options. You can fight, flew, fawn or freeze.
However, upon meeting Dina, a new, unexpected reaction to fear arises…
…you feel JOY!!!

Fight, flight, friend, freeze, flop
And the secret response

Yeah, sure. And while we’re at it, shall we keep all steam rollers and mysterious arrows out of sight, too?!?!?!?

How many cereals have you eaten in you life?
Delicious Taffy
Someone asks Dina how long she can last without mentioning dinoscience, and she responds “Nine seconds is my current limit.”
Thag Simmons
Hmm. Fangs is sort of underselling those choppers I think
Nayann Martinelli
Can anyone confirm if Dina wears tons of sunscreen before heading to classes?
Wagstaff
If she did wear sunscreen, it would have shown in the arc where she went to the lake with Joyce and the others.
While we’re at it, why don’t we check for tentacles in her fingertips?
Varangian
…Are we sure the Sarazus didn’t bring like thirty coffins full of earth to IU? And mix it with the soil that exists there? Because if they did…
Thag Simmons
Even if they didn’t, note the presence of a mysterious and deathly pale student in the background of a few strips
milu
Well that would be a fun and utterly weird twist
Keulen
I was assuming Dina was a velociraptor or some similar dinosaur, but you vampire theory is compelling.

Quick, throw rice on the ground and see if she counts the grains.
Delicious Taffy
That’s leprechauns you’re thinking of.
thejeff
Nah it’s also old Chinese vampire folklore. Mind you, Chinese folklore vampires weren’t really much like our modern version.
The counting thing is a pretty common trope in old folk lore monsters though.
Spencer
Nah.
She acquired Scary Monsters with her part of the Holy Corpse.
Jenny Islander
I bet she can also hear that the (flourescent) lights are on in a room she is about to enter, before she opens the door. Autistic superpowers!
(But seriously, before my ears got old I could hear the electricity in the walls.)
Wagstaff
Oh no… autism woo.
Here’s some wisdom that bears repeating:
Psychiatric labels are NOT toys!

Clif
Yep.
Fart Captor
feral Dina is just new level of hot that Becky was not prepared for
Reltzik
TBF, Becky’s never been prepared for any of the new levels of hot that Dina’s achieved.
Keulen
The messy hair definitely improves her hotness though.
Deanatay
Tousled. The adjective you seek is tousled.
Nono
Okay, I think Becky would be very into horror movies if instead of a chainsaw lunatic they had a sexy midget hunting down lesbians instead.
Wagstaff
Call her a midget, and such a chase may very well be guaranteed.
Deanatay
Velociraptors could use chainsaws!
Okay, probably Deinonychus

Dina gives me Toph vibes in panels 2 and 3.
Wagstaff
You are referring to Toph from Avatar, rigbt?
RassilonTDavros
I can kinda see it… which is funny because otherwise those two characters aren’t really alike at all.
MaximumZero
It’s also funny because Toph would call you out on using “I can see it.”
