Organisational redundancies aren’t a great idea when you have a labour shortage, but what she doesn’t know is that Garbage Roof was dissolved, making this not one of those.
Exactly! What if garbage roof were occupied by other people when needed? Having a backup location would be a useful redundancy!
This is why highly-optimized systems are extremely fragile: They treat necessary safety margins as redundancies to be done away with. Witness the multiple cascading disasters that Just-in-Time inventory procedures have been responsible for.
Well, a certain amount of overcapacity is what we call “resilience,” but I have never seen Garbage Roof operating anywhere near its theoretical capacity.
“the average dumbing of age character has 0.1 garbage roofs” is a statistical error. walky and amber, aka the collective garbage roof georg, with 2 garbage roofs, are statistical anomalies and should not be counted
There are a lot of characters. 0.1 seems a little high
TerribleTransit
Given that Garbage Roof has had at least a dozen participants, that can cover for 120 characters before it drops below a 0.1 average. If anyone has a comprehensive list of character tags I guess we could figure it out.
I think Dorothy’s more upset about the organizational redundancy than she was the prospect of Walky and Amber doing something naughty.
…Hmmm, considering the occasionally remarked upon similarities between Dorothy and Amber, do you think the reason Dorothy was angry at the idea of Walky and Amber hooking up after he rejected her was that technically makes HER a redundancy?
As if Dorothy wasn’t already in the middle of an identity crisis.
I think Dorothy’s immediate reaction was to her presumption that Walky was cheating on Lucy, or at least cheating-adjacent, or just generally putting himself into a situation that Lucy would not be happy with.
The first time Dorothy called a pause, she did a not-great job at keeping that boundary. After their proper break-up and Walky getting together with Lucy (who I do think work together well if they don’t have as much chemistry [yet] as Wam-Bam Thank You Ma’am), he’s done a better job at reminding her they’re just friends now, with the ceiling on personal interaction and influence that implies.
I kind of like his come back about Dorothy liking a level of self destruction, not outright telling everyone else but a reminder that’s he’s the one whoes been better a keeping boundaries lately.
justin8448
Dorothy has definitely been strolling along the edge of self-destruction lately.
I think Amber was definitely trying to bang here and Walky doesn’t get it. That’s why she had the look of sheer and utter horror there while Walky is arguing semantics and doesn’t seem to give a shit that Dorothy is there. Dorothy is probably a little jealous and hurt because she threw herself at Walky, and here he is doing something that looks kinda suspicious with Amber.
That means Dina is the only one reacting appropriately to all of this.
Listen, some redundancy is good. If garbage roof literally can’t contain all your feelings of self loathing it makes sense to create another space for decompression and dissociation
well, this is more of a chill sesh than some self destructive bad behavior, as far as we know i don’t think ambers disassociated at all unless she just does ever roller derby practice or so
There are regional accents within Indiana. Some claim that city folk speak English and country folk speak Hoosier. There is a rural accent that’s not the same as “Southern” but has enough features in common with it to confuse the eye, if not the ear.
it shouldn’t be but it is a red flag for ppl to be like ” don’t even look at another girl in a relationship” although usually it’s from the gf and not someone else in the friend group lol
I…Mmm. Is Dorothy upset that she found Walky and Amber like this or is she upset that she doesn’t get to have a level of privilege that Amber enjoys but probably doesn’t even know she enjoys. The longer this has played out, the more it reads like Walky and Amber can actually be friends and have a level of zen just because they deal with life similarly. Dorothy does not so she gets no garbage roof or sanctum…She has no place to truly unwind, no way of really making a ‘break’ count.
I kinda hope this devolves into her asking them how do they do it.
I like this read. Seems accurate that Dorothy isn’t actually upset about what she is acting upset about… and now you’ve put that idea in my head i hope it happens…. Which probably means something much less healthy is gonna happen instead, heh.
I think she’d get it if she happened to own a Switch. It was clear that Walky’s initial intent was not to stay, but leave with the Switch (and the nachitos). But he was willing to deal with Amber’s rules.
The fact that she’s litigating what does and does not count as “Garbage roof” because she cannot fathom the idea of slacking in the abstract tells me this is likely where it’s going.
Would be a remarkably wholesome resolution to her learning how to be selfish. Walky doesn’t do anything other than explain that doing nothing is its own reward, and if she’s *never* done “nothing” then that explains why she’s so miserable right now. She feels like if she lets go at any moment, she’ll unwind.

Dorothy. Dorothy, redundancy is important to have
Nono
In fact, statistical redundancy helps reinforce results rather than it being attributed to a fluke.

What do flatworms have to do with statistics?

Dorothy, Dorothy. Redundancy. Redundancy is important. Important to have.
Decidedly Orthogonal
Important to have what?

You’re thinking of flatworms, but that was just a fluke.

I see what you did there.

Exactly. I was thinking the same thing.
You want to see what zero-margin, zero-redundancy gets you? Check out “The Cold Equations.”
Do not read “The Cold Equations”, it is a bad story that’s just as contrived (to deliver its “moral”) as the ones it was written in response to.Ana Chronistic
surprised no one mentioned multiple bathrooms aren’t “redundancies”

If it weren’t for redundancy, Worf wouldn’t have survived his spine surgery…

Structural redundancy can be the difference between life and death in an earthquake or a hurricane situation.

Those darn boomers, showing off their second garbage roof. I’m still renting!

As I can imagine Lucy saying… with that very face.

The sanctum is gone, like nachito dust in the wind…

It wasn’t all the wind. Amber helped a little.

doesnt being an organizational redundancy just make it more worthy of being garbage roof 2, though? walkys a step ahead of you dorothy

It’s quite possible, given that two of her exes have rebounded onto Amber thus far.

I really like how Amber is the most socially inept person in the room and yet she’s the only one reacting appropriately to the situation.

Eat the nachitos while everyone is distracted? I dunno, it seems Dino is reacting with the most chill, provided her sexual charisma is acknowledged.

Ok. I’m out. I saw my egregious misspelling of Dina’s name and must now flee in shame.

More practically, Garbage Roof is outdoors and it is winter.

And Garbage Roof lacks outlets for video game devices and a giant dinosaur plushy to lean against.
Nono
…Huh, is it just me, or has Walky’s lexicon almost been reading like he’s picked up Sal’s acccent? With the truncated words and the “yer”s.
‘Course it’s probably just meant to be like a lazy drawl rather than a southern one.
Laura
It’s a solidarity drawl with his sister.

That would indeed be the optimal outcome. Dorothy is making a big fuss over all this nothing, so learning how to decompress would be great for her.

Chapter title probably doesn’t have anything to do with Walky and what he’s looking for or with whom he can find it.
