If she does end up doing it with Walky a lot sooner, I guess it proves that she likes caramel over vanilla.

To be fair, it was never confirmed that they actually had sex before. Danny only said it took him two years to get into her pants. Who knows, maybe he was just looking for his car keys and thought “What the hell…I searched everywhere else.”

Reading through the first book last weekend, I noticed this strip:

      http://www.dumbingofage.com/2011/comic/book-1/05-media-rumble/screening/

I originally picked up on it because Danny says he’s had several girlfriends while his character description said that Dorothy was his first, but now I get to use it to show that we already knew Danny and Dorothy had premarital hanky panky.

      No, I’m not proud.

Makes sense enough. I know my later relationships moved fast because, well, everyone involved was more experienced and knew what they were doing. (Which at least applies to Dorothy.) Having sex for YOUR first time is tough, but afterward it can seem very normal.

…oh and MAN Danny is coming across as awful now.

It’s understandable. His long time girlfriend is moving on faster than him. Even though he’s moved on, she’s already been dating a new guy for a week and he feels a little betrayed.

        1. Andiemus

          11/27/2012, 4:23 am

Understandable, but still douchey of him to bongo about how long it took to get in her pants.

        2. ArkhamTexan

          11/27/2012, 7:43 am

Yeah, and she’s there after saying she’d stay away from him to keep from hurting him and then trying to steal his shoes for her new guy. She’s opening herself up to this line of inquiry. Danny should just tell her to leave because the flip side of this coin is that Danny don’t owe her a goddam. Thing.

        3. Niblik

          11/27/2012, 1:42 pm

          This.
Dorothy is waaaaaaaaaaay out of line trying this stunt. She should know better.
Danny, stop talking and kick her out. Walky is a big boy, he can buy new shoes.

        4. Andiemus

          11/27/2012, 9:19 pm

The whole “are you sleeping with him” thing is unnecessary. If he had just said “hell no, you are my ex and he is your new guy, GTFO” that’d be totally fine. But no. He goes adn asks a series of questions that he KNOWS he won’t like the answer to, pisses about how long it took to get her to sleep with him (presumably her first time), refers to Walky in a derogatory way when Walky’s only crime was liking the same girl Danny does. I don’t like Dorothy coming over and getting involved either but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s being a little bongo.

        5. Rheios

          05/15/2015, 12:44 pm

Well he IS being gripey, but that’s not shocking really. I mean, who hasn’t lashed out, even at someone they really care about, when they’re mad. Especially if the source of the discomfort and anger IS the person cared about. Ya get over it, but NEVER before it makes you look like an ass. (Depending upon things such as distance maintained, time between visits, how MUCH of whatever irritating thing you know about the other Person doing and its potential pitfalls, probably other things I can’t think of.)

2 HIGH SCHOOL years. Not exactly the same thing, especially since there were likely plenty of people attending their high school nowhere near as far from proper Male Virility characteristics as Danny who still haven’t gotten in anybody’s shorts as of yet.

He’s also forgetting the double-standard concerning 4-Year College Freshmen sex lives, since I’m pretty confident if Walky were an upperclassman, it still wouldn’t have been enough for him not to feel shit that justifies being a whiny little bongo about all this. Also, there’s the matter of the one valid thing Dorothy actually should feel bad about, expecting him to bail out the guy he lost her to after so little time, and it doesn’t seem to bother him one bit, beyond the atypical timing of the problem. Dorothy failing to stay in line with his tiny perspective of what he understands, or thinks he does, about love, women, and “what’s RIGHT!,” however, that’s what he seems to be finding wrong with this picture.

IMO, 2 years in high school is a way bigger deal than 2 years as an adult. 2 years to a teenager feels like eternity and is much more significant to them than it does to an adult. And they were actually together for 3 years if I remember correctly, which is a pretty big deal. I find it amazing that any teenager could hold a steady relationship for 3 years without one or both of them screwing it up by being, ya’ know, teenagers and looking at other people, just being careless, etc. I can’t blame Danny at all. She has her new boyfriend hitting him up for shoes after she just dumped him a few weeks ago. He has every right to be pissed. He only went to that school for her and has basically been made to feel like shit since. She dumps him on the first day of school with a lame excuse about not being able to make time or a boyfriend because of her big plans, and here she is fricking off with Walky. I admit, I ship Walky & Dorothy hard, and Danny & Amber even harder. BUT, Danny has every right to be pissed for how she is treating him. Toss me aside after I rearrange my life for you, but the second you need help for your new squeeze, you come running to me? He has every right to be uber pissed.

        1. fit-to-freak

          11/27/2012, 8:56 am

She didn’t want or ask him to rearrange his life for her. She probably would have preferred if he didn’t. She owes him shit.

        2. DudeMyDadOwnsADealership

          11/27/2012, 9:29 am

He has every right to be pissed about her hitting him up for shoes for the sake of her new boyfriend that she knows he would be better off not finding out about.

The thing of it IS, that doesn’t seem to be what he’s pissed about at all.

Dorothy isn’t exactly doing a good job of not encouraging him, but that may be a reason they were an item in the first place….

        3. Wonder Wig

          11/27/2012, 11:36 am

That’s the main point, regardless of our interpretations, that Dorothy knew that this was going to hurt him, and if you know you’re going to hurt someone maybe you should hold-back. Danny brought up the reason he broke up with her a few pages ago, and despite her going against her reasons it would’ve been nicer to wait a few more weeks, at least out of respect for the death of the relationship, and especially if you’re the dumper and not the dumpee.

My compassion for Danny conflicts with my desire to further ship Walky and Dorothy.

“HIGH SCHOOL years. Not exactly the same thing”

This exactly. It would make a lot of sense that, now they’re adults and in college, things would move more quickly because they’re overall a bit more mature and comfortable with these things.

If this were in any other context I’d be way be more pissed off at Danny’s behavior because he really has no right to judge Dorothy at all but I can very easily see how this whole thing comes off as incredibly hurtful on Dorothy’s part so he has a right to be as pissed as he wants right now. That being said I think he will end up giving her the shoes.

As hesitant as I am to say that a girl might be “asking for” something, I think she really shouldn’t have expected any other response from him. She quite literally brought her new boyfriend to his door to ask him for a favor. The nerve of that alone would probably provoke me to say something similar.

The magic of the internetz? Or did Danny update his profile mentioning it, and Dorothy had no idea cuz she wedges herself into her studies and only schedules fun time, which social media would not be, considering that requires 1. friends, and 2. not being a stick-in-the-mud who ‘studies on the weekend’

I’m finding it really hard to see Danny as the bad guy here. I mean yes obviously Dorothy has every right to move on as fast as she wants with whoever she wants but she doesn’t have the right to throw it in Danny’s face and whether she means to or not that’s what it’s coming off as here. She did not have to go to Danny’s room. That was an incredibly incredibly stupid/thoughtless decision on her part and whatever hissy fit Danny’s going to throw as a result she pretty much asked for.

Didn’t she come over to basically apologize? I mean, granted it’s a touchy subject, but if you’re not up front with someone and hide from them, you risk losing you’re relationship in its entirety.

Nah, she definitely came over at Mike’s prompting. I don’t think she gets credit for that. Oh yeah, and she needed those shoes! 😛

        2. DanielleM

          11/27/2012, 12:31 am

She’s still the one who came up with the plan to send Walky to Danny’s room and set this all in motion. Sure she was counting/hoping on Joe being there and not Danny but Danny being there was always a possibility and she decided for the sake of her own convenience it was worth the risk. So she’s earned this. But yes she does get some point for at least attempting to apologize and try to go about this as tactfully as is humanly possible but honestly I feel like the fact that she’s still trying to get the shoes out of him is just ridiculous. She should have said sorry and left.

        3. Raoullefere

          11/27/2012, 3:21 am

But Dotty needs those shoes, just like she needs that interview with Amazi-girl and needs Walky not to wear what he likes. She’s kind of single-minded that way.

And no, acting this way doesn’t make Dotty a super-villian, but it does make her a particularly thoughtless person. Me, I’ll take the villain any day. At least she actually intends to do the harm she causes.

It’s not surprising if we factor in that some people seem to have trouble remembering what’s happened before.

Danny throwing a bit of a fit at 7 in the morning due to his ex finding a new boytoy after dumping him because she was going to apply to a different university (which probably won’t happen) is… understandable.

It’s okay if your totally dismissive of a woman’s sexual choices as long as it happens in the morning. You also get a free pass on being racist as long as it’s before 10:30 am.

        1. Andy

          11/27/2012, 9:18 am

You do realize there’s a difference between understandable and okay, right? Understandable means you get why their doing it, whether or not you’re cool with it.

Somebody having fought in WWII or Korea being racist to Asians? Understandable, but not okay. someone has a shit day at work and comes home and kicks the dog? Understandable but not okay. Someone gets wasted and does something stupid and dangerous? Understandable but not okay.

        2. fit-to-freak

          11/27/2012, 9:31 am

Yeah, It’s understandable. I am not goggling with horror at this new concept that has completely changed my world view. What the hell is the point of saying something is understandable if not to imply that Danny is ‘kinda right’ here? Otherwise it’s meaningless. Of course it’s understandable in the sense that there’s context. EVERYTHING HAS CONTEXT. To just say something is ‘understandable’ gives a sort of passive acceptableness to being a douche.

        3. Andy

          11/27/2012, 2:59 pm

Or it means you get the logic path someone used to get where they are, even if you don’t agree with the response they are currently making. As opposed to not understanding how someone got from Point A to Point B regardless of how you feel about the way they respond.

Understanding a thing does not mean you passively accept it. It doesn’t mean you condone it. It means you now have a point of reference from which to work when discussing it with the person you speak to about it. As opposed to having no understanding of the thing and just making idiotic uninformed statements.

        4. JustDucky

          11/27/2012, 6:16 pm

          Understandable:

          1. Capable of being understood: an understandable sentence.

          2. Expected or accepted under the circumstances: Their anger is understandable, given what happened.

“Understandable” can be used to mean that something can be understood but in the context of human behavior the connotation is that an “understandable” action is reasonable or is forgivable.

        5. Vincent

          11/28/2012, 3:11 am

Well, imagine you being dumped. Two weeks later, your ex turns up at your doorstep at seven in the morning (if you’re not a morning person. If you’re a morning person, imagine 1 am). That ex wants to borrow some of your stuff (no guarantee you’ll get that back) and oh, yeah, they’re dating someone else who pretty much embodies the reason they quit dating you (like, someone shorter than you if they said they dumped you because you’re short, or a muscly jock if they thought you spent too much time training, idk). They throw these two things in your face, pretty much.

Personally, I probably wouldn’t even let my ex in through the door, but that’s me.

I don’t recall being an ex somehow meant you had to be on friendly terms with your former S.O., especially if you were dumped in a bad way.

I’m not saying his response is the best reaction in this situation, but at the same time people have been asking him to stop being a doormat and not be a dick. That is a hard skill to master, especially for a teenager.

The problem is that there is an issue here in which Danny is completely in the right. Going to your recently-dumped ex and asking to borrow clothes for your new boytoy is rude, and trying to hide the new relationship to avoid the expected and perfectly reasonable denial is deceitful. This whole thing is the result of Dorothy acting like a total cockhammock. and it’d be perfectly reasonable to call her out on that.

That isn’t, however, what Danny is choosing to do. Instead, he’s attacking her over dumping him, over her choice of new relationship material, and acting possessive and entitled over access to Dorothy’s vagina, which he had no right to dictate when he was dating her, and sure as hell doesn’t now that he’s been dumped. Dorothy gave him all the moral high ground he could ever want as a gift here, and he’s chosen to be a douchenozzle instead.

I vote Walky and Amber dump ’em both and start seeing each other instead.

I’ve never been in Danny’s situation myself, but I’m not seeing this as him being possessive of Dorothy: he earlier stated that he accepted that she had moved on, even if he was broken up about it.

What he’s been saying, though, is that Dorothy is making it a point to illustrate just how much more she likes Walky than she liked Danny: she’s in bed with him in a matter of days, and more to the point is, very shortly after ragging on Danny for starting to date someone who is very much his style (and also Danny being the dumpee), dating someone who has every single quality she complained about him having when she decided to dump him, and someone who is currently coming off as “that sniveling kid going around asking for shoes at 7 in the morning because he can’t be a freaking adult”.

I’d imagine that, too Danny, everything Dorothy says to him communicates “I was completely lying to you when I broke up with you” and/or “I think you are way, way shittier and useless than you know yourself to be.”

The Mowgli comment is probably meant to come off as racist, and this is a bit too objectifying as well, but seriously, this is a hugely insensitive and painful situation Dorothy is inflicting on him, and would you yourselves claim to remain totally enlightened in such a situation, not saying anything that you later regret?

No, it wasn’t a serious/casual thing. She didn’t want any distractions in her path to Harvard.
Casual sex still is a distraction and that put her previous statment in a doubtfull light, so what he is basiclly listening here is she saying: “I lied, what I really never wanted is be near you”.
That’s why I think he is shocked.

        1. fit-to-freak

          11/27/2012, 9:05 am

Bullshit. So then anything could be a distraction, but he doesn’t seem pissed about her friendship with Joyce. Also, not that she’s obligated to tell him all the reason’s their relationship wasn’t working out (or even obligated to never ever change her mind) but other stuff definitely came up during the breakup. Like Danny’s lack of respect for her dreams, and his own lack of ambition.

        2. KKoro

          11/27/2012, 11:43 pm

….friendship is not nearly as much of a distraction as a sex life, and it’s ridiculous to paint it as such.

No, she’s not “obligated” to be honest about why she broke up with him, just like he’s not “obligated” to not yell at her and accuse her of doubledealing when she comes to him begging for his things at 7 in the morning.

Funny thing about all this “not obligated to X” stuff, is that yes, everyone’s free to be as antisocial as they want to be, so why should they expect kindness and compassion in return?

        3. KKoro

          11/27/2012, 11:49 pm

          Also:

“Like Danny’s lack of respect for her dreams, and his own lack of ambition.”

Buuuuuuuuull. He respected her dreams, he just voiced the possibility that, if by some fluke she did not succeed in them, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. If anything, that’s the healthy view to take.

As for ambition, he plainly had one: to be with her. “Ambition to social climb” is not objectively good, and it’s bizarre that everybody rags on him for placing more value in other things.

If there was evidence of him wanting out of the relationship but feeling obligated to stay in because she hadn’t done anything “wrong”, then it WOULD have been compassionate of her to dump him.

But that’s not it: she dumped Danny because he wasn’t the kind of person she wanted him to be, and it’s incorrect to pretend that she actually was doing “what was best for him”.

        4. Andiemus

          11/27/2012, 9:25 pm

I was under the impression that she dumped him because he was making his entire life revolve around her, which was something that she didn’t want or ask for, and was rather creepy.

Dorothy isn’t HAVING casual sex. She’s having a relationship that she’s taking seriously, sufficiently so that she feels she needs to control what her new steady boyfriend wears.

Not that Danny would be happier if she were casually sleeping with a different boy each evening, but if you have to paint the situation as something it patently is not, then there’s something wrong with your argument.

While I agree that it isn’t really any of Danny’s business how fast Dorothy moves on, I can’t believe that he’s the one catching so much flack here.

You know what else would have kept this situation from being awkward or even happening? Dorothy could have been honest in the first place. See, when we borrow things without asking the person they belong to – stealing. Which is exactly what she planned to do as she wanted to talk to Joe, not Danny. How hard is it to say “Hey Danny, my friend lost his shoes yesterday and doesn’t have time to get a new pair before class. Can he borrow a pair of yours?’

It’s not like he’s trying to brand her with an A or anything. I’d be pretty irritated too if one of my exes showed up on my doorstep with a pack of bs needing a favor at 7AM.

        “scrutinizing your ex’s sex life”

A sex life thrown in his face at 7am.

“and acting as though your ‘earn’ the right to have sex?”

I read it more that he feels that Walky is a worse choice in a boy friend then himself. Pride & ego.

His comments are angry & crass, but they are trying to hit him up for shoes at a horrible hour in a lame way because Dorothy believes Danny is easy.

I’m amused that such a rare showing or angry, crass comments from Danny is enough for Posters to decry him so.

It’s also amusing to me because Walky’s almost crying in the hall, can only call Mike a jerk fro such epic dickery, while Danny is all ‘WTF? THAT guy? Please. I’m better.’

Danny’s got more kahunas right now. It’s arrogant, but it shows he’s not the complete doormat, and has more backbone then Walky has with most others.

Oh dear, Danny. That’s a poor, dickish argument to make. Heh, I remember making that same argument back with my ex-wife. Instead of 2 years, it was 5 years. And instead of two weeks, it was two days and with the best friend before anything was even filed. DESPITE that, it’s still a crappy argument to make that doesn’t paint you in a good light, Danny. It’s probably why people need time and distance in order to heal and get over things, because feelings will still be hurt, emotional, and raw at this point. People won’t be at their best. So I understand, Danny. Poor argument, but these aren’t the best of circumstances.

Probably seems like someone needs to stay away from him to let him heal so he can be in a better mind rather than be exposed to the cause of his hurt and her new boyfriend. Sounds like someone shouldn’t be trying to steal his shoes and come back into his life after saying she’d stay away, eh, Dorothy?

I hope he tells her to get out and to actually live up to her word of staying the hell away from him. Then I hope Walky observes that that’s the way she seems to treat people–as means to an end. Danny for shoes, Walky as a fun distraction. It’s GREAT to be a fun distraction and Walky seems to understand that, so no harm there… but now that he’s seen how Dorothy treats others that were supposedly important to her? It’d be pretty neat if Walky decided he didn’t want any of that either and leave. So Dorothy would be out both Danny AND Walky.

Then maybe, just maybe, she’ll decide not to be so damn single-minded and grow in the same way Danny needs to grow.

I don’t think he cares to win an argument. It looks more like he’s getting hid with a lot of BS in rapid fire succession, at a horrible hour, and his comments are going to be raw & unfiltered.

I dunno. I’ve accepted that my ex has moved on, but I still find it immensely hurtful to imagine her being intimate with other people. was a sobbing mess for a week when her boyfriend taunted me about his sexual relationship with her. I understand that this is my problem, and I keep it to myself. And, for everyone’s sake, I now keep myself out of her life.

If she came to my home and started telling me about her love life, I think I would be justifiably angry at her.

“when her boyfriend taunted me about his sexual relationship with her.”

What an idiot. I’m sorry you had to deal with such BS.

I can’t believe Dorothy is actually still pursuing this goal. Why should Danny help her at all? And while he might be douchey about the sex thing, I definitely know that put in the same situation, I would at least be thinking it.

Hi! First time poster, long-time lurker.

As a raging sex-positive feminist, I’m *still* surprised by how many people are saying Danny’s out of line here. Maybe it’s because I’ve been the “Dorothy” in this kind of situation in the past, and I regretted it. Even though Danny is talking about sex, he’s not *really* talking about sex. I think Dorothy knows that too. She’s caused him a lot of undue pain by approaching this situation so childishly. Essentially the message she sent was “I told you I didn’t want distractions in order to spare your feelings, but the truth is that I just didn’t like you anymore, and I couldn’t be bothered to tell you myself until I was forced to by circumstances.” The message is reinforced tenfold by the fact that the new guy is WALKY, who is kind of like an eight-year-old boy. So yeah, there are some raw emotions in play on his side, but I think he deserves a little sympathy.

Danny did say the wrong thing. But Dorothy is way more wrong in this situation. They didn’t even ask Sierra if she knows any guys who might have shoes Walky could borrow… or Joyce… or Sarah… etc. She went right to Danny, knowing full well what she promised and the overall dickishness of the situation. I’m much more likely to side with Danny on this mostly because Dorothy should know better given her relative maturity compared to him. Doesn’t mean they both don’t have faults and virtues, of course.

    2 years?

In comic time, that’s going to be at least a decade or two until Walky gets some

Seeing the arguments “Danny is being a jerk!” and “No Dorothy is being a jerk”, I’m here to say that they are BOTH being pretty shitty to each other. Dorothy is being crazily insensitive and Danny is criticizing an ex’s love life and making sexist and vaguely racist comments. These people are just being horrible to each other, and both deserve a swift kick in the shin.

“Kid from the Jungle Book” crack a few strips back.

Though Walky is… kind of similar I guess? Bare feet and a bit of a kidlike demeanor? I… I don’t remember the Disney version very well. (superior original version has him as a young adult, tearing down villages with the help of animals and such)

That’s not necessarily racist. Besides the bare feet and the kid-like demeanor, he appears to have shaggy hair and his communication skills could use some help. Sometimes people just bring characters to mind. When I think of Mowgli, I don’t even really think about him being Indian really. It actually took me a minute to recall hi nationality.

Also, I called my niece Mowgli for years, so much so that her mom started calling her Mowgli too. She was small, wild haired and ran around barefoot, often half naked.

I am from café au lait etinicity, and altought I can´t exactly relate what my caramel brothers endure, I didn’t get offended by that “kid from The Jungle Book”.

Yes, the first thing I notice was that Walky really has some physical resemblance from Mowgli, but the strong ideia I got from that remark was that Walky was raised by animals.

Marmosets, or maybe meerkats, I suppose. Look at that eyes, that hands and that slouched posture!

Of course it took him a long time to get into Dorothy’s pants.

She’s at least five sizes smaller than he is.
