      Back when I was living in my original home country, the comic used to update either Midnight or 2 AM depending on the time of the year.

      Now where I live it updates at 6 AM (plus 10 to 15 minutes, give or take), so unless I got a morning shift I don’t get to be one of the early commenters anymore lol

          The Lonely Island is actually Andy Samberg and two other comedians who’s names I can never remember (I think they were vaguely nordic names like Jan and Sven or something like that), that trilogy of songs/music videos are actually The Lonely Island featuring Justin Timberlake, many of their songs have featured various other celebrities, likely due to their SNL connections.

          IIRC The Lonely Island got their start doing the web originals for SNL, much like the current trio of Please Don’t Destroy, although the latter group seems less musically inclined.

        I’m wondering where this is gonna go. Walky did “jokingly” mention being in a polycule with Lucy and Amber. So I think at least he’d be open to the idea of a V type situation with Dorothy as the hinge. I don’t think Walky and Joyce would be interested in each other, but they could make semi-peaceable metamours.

        Although I think bi Joyce is more canon than bi Dorothy at this point. She might be floating around the idea because she’s thinking of Joyce as a lost sheep.

        … Now that I typed that part out loud, I realize how incredibly stupid that sounds and I’m really looking at a gay ship or some really heinous queerbaiting.

          Personally, I’d be bothered by a bi- or lesbian Joyce, if only because that would feel like a massive betrayal of Becky, like, if there was any room at all for attraction to women, this seems way too late to be factoring it in IMO (sure, in-universe it’s only been a few months, but still). If Joyce got with Dorothy, it could pretty much only lead to more pointless drama with Becky (because it would be *super* out of character for her not to blow up about that) and I’m still kinda sick of it from the last time they had a falling out.

          I also really like the mutual character growth going on between Joyce and Joe, they’ve always been really good for each other and I’m glad that’s finally going somewhere, I don’t wanna see that messed up (and while Joyce isn’t Christian anymore, I’m not sure I could see her going poly, let alone handling being in a poly relationship very well, she doesn’t like sharing and doesn’t like her food touching afterall).

      We’re in the “clueless bisexual” phase of the friendship. There are several ways it could go from here as pressure builds, either becoming more volatile and exploding or simply combusting and condensing into a more stable state. We’ll see (though it might take another ten years to get there)

I don’t actually think he’s a manchild, not according to the traditional slang anyway; he’s more like Peter Pan, perfectly aware that a non-faerie world exists but he interacts with it under duress.

        The Ross/Rachel drama happened because execs thought it would make the show more popular on 90’s TV. DoA isn’t a 90’s TV show, it’s a webcomic made by kind of a weird guy (if only by virtue of making a webcomic) who doesn’t care about ratings, and Walky/Lucy is probably the least popular pairing in the whole run of the comic by like, a significant margin.

          It also felt like them going, hey, we set up a conflict between these two characters based on their current goals and personalities, and it’s not super easy to create a running gag from it… what if we introduced an additional issue that completely took away from the original difficulties so we could all just focus on that.

          I’m amused by combining “doesn’t care about ratings” and “the least popular pairing”.

          Mostly though, Willis does care about drama and character arcs and it feels weird to me to set up the Lucy relationship and just have it fizzle out with no real dramatic payoff.
          I doubt it’s going to be the “we hadn’t really broken up” thing, but I’ll bet that’s not over and there’s another shoe to drop from that.

        See, I’d actually like for them to be platonic friends. They seemed to be good there. But, that’s also how I tend to lean, and not everyone thinks that way. And I don’t know if Dorothy would be secure enough to be okay with that. (Although if she was feeling sufficiently secure, I feel like she might be okay with it because it seems like the rational choice, the high road, etc..)

        I want to see Walky get shat on instead. They both did poor communicating, but he knew he was doing a bad job communicating. I want to see Walky willing to and trying to rekindle _anything_, romantic or friendship, and have her realize that she’s not even interested in friendship with him, that it was all the crush.

        I want her to be making friends with people who have fun with her, and she has fun with, and it’s not some desperate adolescent popularity contest. Just genuinely having a good time hanging out. But also because I’m petty, I want it to be with Ken, and I want them laughing loud and often, and Walky can hear it through the half-bath, while he’s staring at Mike’s “You’re Fucked” poster.

        When I was about 20 and living with my friends in a uni-student commune, my best friend met a girl over the summer and brought her into our friends circle and our lives.

        Her voice was annoying, and suddenly I went from spending most of my time with him to the periphery of of his attention.

        I saw the lady in question fully naked for anextended time when they were both being body painted, and I was unmoved and bored.

        TL: DR, because I disliked her I couldn’t see her as attractive. Later we started getting along and I got to know her, and I realsed she’s actually ridiculously hot, to a ”pick your Hollywood actress” level.

        I’m a horny heterosexual, especially as the 20 year old me, but our minds are complicated things.

        The attraction being an element is kind of weird, at least in context of the original suggestion. She was going to hide behind a curtain and watch – why does it matter if she’s hot?

        That’s less clear here and the way it’s phrased, Walky could easily take it as a something closer to an actual threesome with Joyce involved, where it would matter.

        Jennifer knew she liked both males and females, but what she denied was the label and sometimes even the idea of an actual bisexual person, not the attraction she had.

        Dorothy stated long ago that she had no attraction towards women, and any change since then has not been verbalized on screen to anyone, not even to herself, and actions supporting a change could still be interpreted as her not realizing it herself.

        So it’s kinda the opposite of Jennifer.

          Dorothy explicitly stated forever ago that she would rate herself as a 2 on the Kinsey Scale, meaning that she’s at least somewhat sexually attracted to women, and she’s aware of that fact.

          If at some other point she denied ever being attracted to women, I don’t recall it.

      Maybe it’s just my shipping glasses and desire to see poly representation* in main characters, but both Joyce’s and Walky’s “eeeugh” behaviour towards the other feels more performative than real. Also, most of their insults don’t read as bad things, like when Joyce referred to Walky as a “human shaped pile of sarcasm and McNuggets” when he was present.

    Somehow, I KEEP getting surprised by this kind of thing, even though I’ve KNOWN for AGES now that the creator of Dumbing of Age is not, in fact, any less freaky than their own fans. And that, like…with no set plan or ending point for the comic, there isn’t actually anything STOPPING him from just putting whatever he feels like putting in the moment into the comic.

    It still feels so damn weird, though. I can’t think of any other fandoms where the crack-shipping abilities of the author not only meet, but arguably out-compete, the crack-shipping abilities of the fans.

        This…is also a good point, I guess. It’s somewhat different, I would argue, because I don’t really consider Andrew Hussie’s ability to outdo the craziness of his own fans to be a *positive* thing.

        Plus, most of the *really* unhinged stuff is in the Epilogues, which don’t count.
