Those two scenarios aren’t equivalent at all. Shipping canonically gay characters in straight pairings is not even close to the same thing as shipping canonically straight characters in gay pairings.
I get what you’re saying, that ignoring the sexuality of someone seems icky either way, but they’re fictional characters. From a real-world sociological perspective, the former is bad, but the latter is good. Actually, most of the time it’s the only way LGBT fans will ever get to see LGBT relationships between their favorite characters, sadly.

Especially since people who thought they were very straight realize they’re not all the time.
A quick glance through the cast page (which obviously lacks a few minor characters) gives us nine confirmed or implied straight people out of 21. Which is just under half, which is honestly a higher rate than I expected for this comic!
But yeah, also recognise the point. It sometimes feels weird to me to see people make mods to make straight folk not straight in video games (depending on the game, the character and the availability of SS romance options) but it genuinely bothers me when it’s done for gay characters. One in particular where his experiences of being gay were a key part of his story (his unwillingness to pretend to be straight and procreate caused massive issues with his noble family) REALLY upset me when I saw a mod to allow female characters to romance him, because it’s disrespecting who he is on a fundamental level which is not only echoed in his own story, but also seen very commonly in the world.

I personally wouldn’t write it, but for all I know, another author doing so is a trans person who sees a lot of themselves in said character and their relationship and it’s not my place to come down on that. It’s also really really not my place to interrogate people and find out if that’s the case. So when I see fics like that, I usually scroll past them.
That is, when the ship is turning a gay character straight.
Gender bends in general? I dunno. I know a lot of people prefer to do trans head canons instead, and those are great, but I’m not sure whether or not that’s just another form of gender bending? Personally, as someone who gets pretty frustrated by huge franchises I love having major male characters outnumber major female characters 2 to 1 at the very least, looking at art or fic where some of those guys were girls was empowering for me when I was younger. I also know GNC guys who felt similarly about having very feminine girls gender bent into GNC guys so….yeah, it’s complicated.
I don’t think they’re addressing it toward non-canon shippers like you (and me). Some people actually want their ships to become canon, and in this case those people are gonna be disappointed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think that there is a big test ahead for Sal and Marcie. Specifically, whether their friendship is strong enough to survive Marcie’s feelings of guilt and Sal’s awkwardness at this revelation. It would be easier to just go their separate ways rather than confront this but that would be a shame, I think.
Easier if they were casual friends, but Sal and Marcie have been through a lot. It is possible to be friends with people who you are attracted to and aren’t interested in a relationship, as long as there’s trust.

Most likely, Marcie has a unique sign for each person she signs about a lot. One of my sisters works with deaf kids, and she says they tend to invent unique signs to refer to specific people by name.
I suspect that Marcie is very aware that Sal doesn’t think of her that way and so has been trying to let no hint of her feelings out. However, she’s only human and it has still been affecting her behaviour towards Sal in a thousand different ways.

What i don’t get is the truck smashing half of Sal’s brain. I haven’t read the first comic Willis did so this is my first interaction with these characters – is the truck a reference? Or is it just a “stunned surprise” realization?

Well, there’s a lot of discussion of the truck. It feels like a reference and i’d like to know what i’m missing.
Ruth was killed by a truck in the Walkyverse. That’s all the discussion is about.
A bit higher up Delicious Taffy called it “A truckload of fuck”. I think that’s what it’s mainly meant to convey. Of course it’s also a truck and Ruth got killed by one in another comic by Willis and now trucks are a morbid running gag.

I think that Marcie was over it by then? As in she knew very well that Sal was straight and that it wasn’t happening, and this conversation was in bounds of what she could handle? But the stitches are reopening now because almost kissing someone is very much not in those bounds.

I think that there is a big test ahead for Sal and Marcie. Specifically, whether their friendship is strong enough to survive Marcie’s feelings of guilt and Sal’s awkwardness at this revelation. It would be easier to just go their separate ways rather than confront this but that would be a shame, I think.
Easier if they were casual friends, but Sal and Marcie have been through a lot. It is possible to be friends with people who you are attracted to and aren’t interested in a relationship, as long as there’s trust.

Most likely, Marcie has a unique sign for each person she signs about a lot. One of my sisters works with deaf kids, and she says they tend to invent unique signs to refer to specific people by name.
