  1. Wayne Campbell face: Exactly!

    1. (one more day of MAGFest for me to decide on the next anachronistic avatar)

      1. That’s where you’ve been!!!! That answers that!

        1. We were getting worried!

        2. idk why, sometimes I just dip out

or leave the house at 11p to pick up a friend 90 minutes away bc that’s when we’re free

  2. Oh, this has been a long time coming huh.

    1. And it’s not even Feb. 14 yet.

    2. Better to do it now versus “fuck you guys i’m out” at an age where he’d have the money/ability to move halfway across the country and go no contact then lol

      1. Is it opposite day? Because that is the smart play.

        1. Decidedly Orthogonal

Agreed. Happily, I had my dad to fall back on when mom threw me away at 10 years. But I fault no child for milking their larents for every benefit they can get while growing up, nor for saying, “fuck it,” and jumping ship sooner if they need to.

        2. Yeah, sometimes–if you can tolerate them–you’ve gotta milk your parents for every resource they’ll give you before you jump ship. My best friend(/roommate/platonic partner/basically-sister) cut contact with her parents too early and we would’ve starved about it after she lost her job, if not for my willingness to take advantage of my parents having surplus money.

Obviously, I will never fault anyone for cutting off toxic relatives (and it’s something I’d also like to do someday) but if you can stand it, there’s no harm in taking advantage of the situation while you still can. I consider mine “emotional compensation for childhood pain and suffering,” lmao

  3. Oooo, good for Walky! Wow, I feel bad for assuming (okay, cheering for) his acting out was going to come in the form of hooking up with someone.

    1. He could still go for both…

      1. He could be doing that right now, you can’t see what’s going on behind the car.

        1. That could be happening ANY TIME you can’t see below a character’s waist.

Sounds like a really weird fanfiction…

        2. Dumbing of Age: Lower Decks

      2. So like, Lucy and Amber? I like your style.

  4. Walky would go platinum on Twitter

  5. I did an incredibly loud OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH in my room at that last frame.

  6. I wonder how long he was sitting there gathering the courage to do what he believed was the most ballsy thing he’s ever done in his life.

    1. And he did it in the Walkyest way imaginable.

      1. He’s been taking lessons from Becky.

    2. I mean, it probably is the most ballsy thing he’s ever done in his life up to this point.

As for the “how long,” it’s either been at least several hours, or fifteen seconds tops.

      1. Especially considering how much this endangers his golden boy status (which yes is actually terrible in it’s own way but comes with perks as well) this really is pretty damn ballsy of him.

And I’m guessing several hours waiting and fifteen seconds deciding what to say once he spotted them coming.

      2. Well, except for all those things he did involving his balls with Dorothy. And Amber.

But I grant that may be a somewhat different definition of ballsy.

        1. Also the bits where he was quipping whilst dealing with an actual “my friends and I have been kidnapped” situation.

I’d argue going to Amber and apologising for saying the bad things and making things better between them (even if it got awkward because she doesn’t really do “polite social filter” and also has destructive impulses of her own/may have thought he WAS hitting on her) was pretty ballsy…

        2. Considering the very real possibility that bringing the incident back up may have resulted in some level of physical violence, given Amber’s … Amberosity? Yeah, I’d call it pretty ballsy of him.

    3. Honestly this may be the actually-ballsiest thing he’s done, standing up to your parents at ALL is flipping terrifying.

  7. Help, how do I choose both options on a poll

    1. Choose the 2nd with a different browser.

  8. Well if she’s just going to admit it.

  9. Welp. That’s a way to start this conversation.

    1. You’re expecting a conversation?

      1. There wouldn’t be much comic if he just dropped that line and scampered away.

        Besides, he did that already.

  10. AAAAAAAAAYYYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOI

  11. Dumbing of Age Book 14: racistmomsayswhat

  12. We got ’em!

  13. AND THE PENNY DROPS.

  14. Jennifer knows walky better than me because I thought this was going to take at least one more timeskip and future parents’ visit day to come up

  15. It’s understandable, albeit kind of sad, that Jennifer has more faith in Walky and seems better at predicting him than she is, but they did get more time together, and Sal and Walky mending their relationship has been relatively recent.

Still, it does kind of highlight that their issues aren’t some Good Guy, Bad Guy thing, that both of them have things to work on when it comes to being the best siblings they can be to each other.

    1. well he was dating lucy so i’m sure jennifer would’ve heard about walky a bit more from lucy’s gushing

    2. See, I read this as them both considering all three options, and slowly going over them together; Jennifer really is completing Sal’s thoughts of “these are the things Walky might do”. The one she gets just happens to be the right one, for narrative flow reasons.

      1. Yeah, that’s how I interpret it as well.

  16. Inexplicably, Linda believes that Charles said this to her and provokes an argument to which he never bothers to actually participate in, not even denying her accusations. This is how Walky makes his parents get a divorce and adds another layer of guilt to his first year of college.

Though for real, I’m like really worried about him. I cannot see this going well.

    1. Him being Walky, of course. Charles is a bit like a maple seed or a butterfly, just kinda goes where ever the wind wings him.

    2. I worry that he’s just going to fling accusations around, and Linda will rightfully tell him that he fucked up plenty on his own with Lucy.

      1. Which he already knows, so that won’t derail him for long

    3. If the past is anything to go by, Sal and Walky have switched places and now Linda will have to explain to him in patient detail that a mother simply understands these things and it has nothing to do with skin color, I just think Lucy is a bad influence on you, and Walky will either chicken out and solidify that Lucy can do better than him, or he’ll push the button really hard and Linda will without so much as a blink say some shit like she wishes he was more like Billie.

  17. Oooof, this’ll be one hell of a goodbye conversation and I need to see it.

    1. Linda will see the error of her ways and decide to become a better mom and a better person. This is going to go so well.

    2. lol be great if there were witnesses or so

  18. I couldn’t even catch my at the time 11 year old nephew with Updog and a grown ass woman falls for that.

    1. I assume that Walky was too quite for her to hear it as distinct syllables – just abstract susurration in her son’s voice.

PS. How did you get the final word of your comment to be in italics?

      1. Italics tags. at the start of what you want in italics (without the space) and (without the space) to close it. You can also use for bold and for strike through.

        1. Looks like I can’t just use the indicators with a space to have them not read by the software. Lets try this. around your words for italics. around your words for bold and around your words for strike through.

And if this works it’s to do what I did in this post to make the codes visible.

        2. Okay if that doesn’t work what the fuck is the code tag even for?

        3. just use & lt ; for , without the spaces.

        4. just use & lt ; for < and & gt ; for > , without spaces ofc

        5. It’s a lot faster and more efficient to tell people to google html tags for italics and bold. You don’t run into this sort of problem and they get to do a teeny tiny bit of their own problem-solving.

        6. Looks like I failed to close the italics correctly there too. The perils of sites where you have to type html in by hand like you did in the olden days.

        7. This works: <i>italucs</i> italics
See the note beliw the edit area for more info.

        8. Thanks! You guys put a lot effort into this – appreciate it.

      2. The possible tags are listed below the comment box you type in. To stop doing the thing, you use the same tag again, with a / after the <

        1. Hey Proxie Hunter. What’s Updoc?

        2. Good question. I’ve been thinking about Updoc for a while, and I still can’t figure out what it is! That really Bugs me…

        3. I’m pretty sure it’s a non-anime version of a Henwei

      3. We can only hope he was too quiet to be heard…

        1. Yes, we shall all hope that.

          *Maintains completely serious face*

    2. i’m sure she’ll either be confused or shout at walky within the next 2 seconds lol

    3. I’d posit an 11 year old is the most difficult target for an updog

  19. I know its probably not important, but now I desperately want to know what that sign says. Given that I assume that it is on the lizard’s cage, and thus likely written by Malaya, it could say almost anything.

    1. Do Not Touch
      Science Project
      https://www.dumbingofage.com/pronouns/

      1. Thanks. Wow, you have a good memory, especially to know the exact strip to cite.

        1. I looked under tag/malaya+sal for the cage and sign appearing in the background, and searched for the word “science” in the comments (this is not the first time someone has wondered). That strip was cited for confirmation for someone’s guess.

  20. “Your name is ‘Knotwhut Watt’. Sex?”–after an episode of The Monkees

    1. I wonder what percentage of the commentariat knows who the Monkees are (well, were)? It wouldn’t surprise me if a significant portion of their parents aren’t old enough to.

      1. what? Isn’t MTV still showing reruns?

        1. I mean, I haven’t watched MTV in awhile, but why would they mess with success?

        2. I really haven’t watched MTV since the late 80s, so I couldn’t say, but I think they showed a marathon in the mid-80s and that was it. I assume MTV doesn’t show anything anymore except really cut-rate “reality” shows.

        3. it still showed music videos when i was watching

–Dave, i did NOT get to see Video Killed the Radio Star’s first showing, no

ps: Mouseketeer roll call, count! off! now! go Speed Ra-cer, go Speed Ra-cer, go Speed Ra-cer go-o!

        4. counters with Johnny Quest.

        5. i have only EVER seen one episode of Johnny Quest
with the cave and the white ghost-like energy monster
          that ‘consumes’ things

–Dave, I have seen it several separate times though

        6. Nah, couldn’t be. Where else would music groups show their vids?

      2. I got to see three of the Monkees when they were all still alive. Now half of them are dead. The sound system in the building was cranked up so loud that it was distorting the vocals and making it impossible to hear the words. It would have been an awesome show otherwise.

        1. everybody remember Weird Al’s Pirate Satelite?

      3. You’re slightly younger than me, assuming that number in your name is your birth year. And I know there are people a fair bit older than me who post.

        1. We’re about the same, then.

      4. Hey, some of us youngin’s* had Nick@Nite.

(*I claim the title even though I’m closer to 40 than 30, because that’s an unsettling thought in its own right.)

      5. (Slowly crumbles into dust)

(Last words are a faint, and completely incomprehensible “Cheer up, Sleepy Jean…)

      6. I am so old, I remember seeing the show when it was first broadcast, before cable was a thing.

  21. previewed panel

    1. also, Charles’ shoes are tied. He’s probably a replicant.

      1. Or Linda decided to make him tie them so he didn’t make her look bad.

  22. …Honestly, I respect him broaching the subject at all.

  23. She’s gonna run him over with the car.

    1. And then someone will be like, “You just ran him over with your car!” And she’ll be like, “Oh, so you’re going to make it out like it’s MY fault. *eyeroll*”

      1. But then she’ll back over him the other way to make everything alright again.

    2. Which would at least confirm he’s acting with integrity, right?

      1. The mom was the truck all along.

    3. lol wel being in the hospital for a car accident would get him outta clas for a while

  24. I actually wheezed

    1. Which one of the seven dwarves are you?

      1. Wheezy is one of the Seven Other Dwarves.

        1. Wheezy, Gimly, Inky, Pinky, Blinky, Bombur, and Clyde.

  25. Perfect execution. No notes.

    1. and all this time I thought it was no regrets.

      1. 5/7, no notes
i’m pretty sure i did that right

  26. This i did not expect

    1. No one expects the racistmomsayswhat.

      1. its chief weapon is incredulity

  27. I can’t fathom what Walky hopes to gain from this. If your parent is a bigot there are two ways to approach the situation: you either have hope they can be educated and start the conversation that will set them straight; or you know in your heart that they’re too stubborn to change and go low/no contact.
This is neither of those things

    1. Though it’s in the second category for the Walkerton parents Walky might still have trouble processing that since falling out of favor after seemingly having it his whole life without effort happened overnight for him. He might still be holding out hope for wacky hijinks to work or maybe is trying to cement the fact that the parents he thought he had don’t exist through one last silly attempt.

    2. There are three. The third is to know that you have no power to change the situation but act out anyway because it momentarily makes you feel better.

    3. I think what Walky really hopes to gain out of this is a new personal record for the 100m dash as he careens away.

    4. Or he’s trying to get a do-over for the times he screwed up with Lucy. And he’s picking the one where his mistake was secondary to someone else being terrible.

    5. this is technically a lolwhat/single contact

  28. The fact that fuckin worked
Walky should just beat feet now there’s no topping that

  29. DRAG HER ASS, WALKY.

  30. That’s such a Walky thing to do, confront with a tinge of cowardice

Yeah how dare you end the storyline, we wanna see karaoke!!

    1. To be fair when you have somebody like Linda whose always on the verge of explosive anger I can see how this could be one way to say something on his mind without getting into more trouble then it’s worth.

  31. This is going to be one of the most Walky things he’s ever done.

  32. What?

    1. AHA!

      1. Taaaake

        Oooonnn

        Meeeeeeee

        Take on me

        1. he’lllll beeee goooone

          aoo-EEEEEEE

  33. My man! Hope he actually follows through

  34. wow Walky, I didn’t think you had it in you

(also lol “the sibling content he’s craving” ?)

  35. Heey Malaya. What is this 2 meters tall covered “science” box in the background ? Is this why you allowed Fuckface to stay with Carla ? :3

  36. Oh my gods, I laughed so hard.

  37. I’ve never been more excited for the next page lmao

  38. Please, for the love of fuck, if I have to see Linda Walkerton eating lunch one more goddamn time

    1. Who knows, maybe we’ll get lucky and lunch will eat her? [hums the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes theme]

      1. I didn’t know Charles had a nickname

  39. I love that it’s looking like Linda and Charles were gonna leave without a final good bye to their kids. And by love, I mean hate and it makes me wanna lay on the floor wishing I could adopt fictional characters.

    1. Got to wonder how many other possible family and friends this couple have alienated in their lives over petty BS.

  40. I won’t be surprised if this is the entirety of the confrontation but oh how delicious it would be to get a walky vs linda throw down

  41. I want Walky to have gone to karaoke. I think he’s got a good singing voice, is a natural clown (therefore like attention), and has stored a lot of music in his brain.

    https://www.dumbingofage.com/2017/comic/book-8/01-face-the-strange/existence/

    1. I want to see it for more sinister reasons: Walky and Dorothy arguing through song.

      1. I want the karaoke group to turn up HERE
        as backup singers
for the inexplicably musical family fight
        about to break out

–Dave, Jennifer and Ruth bobbing one way in unison while Dorothy sings out
        ‘chickadee tibit, chickadee tidbit
        skedaddle skedaddle pow’

ps: will honestly be impressed if anyone younger than Willis gets the reference

  42. I liked how in WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, the energy vampire keeps trying to do the updog joke and none of the vampires are falling for it. Despite being, objectively, the stupidest vampires on Earth.

  43. Absolutely nothing can possibly go wrong with Walky’s plan, and I unreservedly endorse it.

  44. oh no

    oh nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  45. Well, this is going to be painful.

  46. Wait is WALKY going to confront his mom?? Oh wow

    1. “In the most over-the-top yet half-assed way possible.”

  47. Walky NO! at least not alone. This won’t end well…

  48. Next Dumbing of Age book title:
“Currently doing the right thing in the most over-the-top yet half-assed way possible.”

  49. that’s a huge ass car

    1. at least it’s not a NASCAR ass-car

  50. Looks like Walky is putting all his determination into becoming the most hated twin in his mother’s eyes. I’m pretty sure he will succeed.

  51. WALKYYYYYYYYY LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO

  52. He’s trying.
    Which…

  53. Love seeing more of this side of Jennifer.
Also, it’s good showing she isn’t useless, she at least knows walks very well.
Maybe she knows him the best, at least better than he knows himself

  54. Wait, Malaya’s right about Jennifer followed by Jennifer being right about Walky? I’m not sure about this. It just feels wrong.
